I managed to squeeze in this set tonight, playing exactly 10 turns. Some hilights:
-Currency comes in. I go with metal casting.
-Professor Orange offers polytheism for the Low Low Price! of mathematics and most of our money. I pass.
-Our cities are pretty heavily populated. Most of these people are contributing little/nothing to the war effort...until I whip them into shape.
-Julius Caesar shows up. He owns the Hindu capital, and is first on the score chart. He made contact with a workboat scout, so he's far away...but on our continent, more than likely.
-The barbarians begin mining their iron. I'm excited. Then, I look again: no, the barbarians have begun *cottaging* their iron. I let out a primal scream.
-One elephant goes west instead of east. This is because Justinian has an axeman there, and all we have is a warrior. Wouldn't want anything inconvenient happening to our capital. The axeman doesn't seem to notice that he's being stalked by a giant elephant.
-Upon further examination, that axe may be heading for the barbs. They have a worker, a decent set of resources, etc. If J takes it, it will be defended by...an axe. And hey, we'll have an elephant there!
-Orange comes back, begging construction. It's a good tech, he's pleased, we're both Jews, and he's already #1 on the power charts. Turn him down. He remains pleased.
-Justinian takes out the first barbarian warrior in Harappan, while the worker hides behind the other one. That city's going down, unless we declare and take out the axe. I don't see any reason to, however.
...and that's where my set ends. We are exactly tied with Justinian in power, with Orange a fair jump ahead. Whipping is pretty marginal at this point, but I got good value (I think) from the ones I executed. Our cities are building cat/cat/phant, at 4/14/2 turns, respectively (that 14 is the silk city, which has just hit 3 population). MC comes in next turn, I suggest machinery next. We'll want a colosseum in London soon enough -- that's the whip I was most strongly considering. Justinian wants construction from us, but he won't trade metal casting or calendar. In fact, there's nothing useful available for trade at all, resource or tech, from anyone.
Our army on Just's border is 2 'phants and 3 cats strong, with another jumbo two steps away. Both of Justinian's cities (that we're aware of) are on hills.
In terms of set quality, I think I might have screwed up whip timing in Nottingham (silk city), but it shouldn't be too costly. Let me know if anyone thinks I made other mistakes (I'm pretty sure I'm the weakest player on this team).
