[RD] Russia Invades Ukraine: Eight

Big explosions in Bryansk Airport tonight, seems like Ukraine hit a pretty significant concentration of arms/ammo.

Meanwhile Russia has hit some apartment building in Kharkiv and has destroyed the Regional Administration building in Kherson.

Russia launched a large-scale missile attack on Ukraine overnight, hitting Kyiv, Lutsk and Ternopil, among others.

From 'fighter-bomber' Russian milblogger: Russian airforce is in a state of "desperation and poverty", he blames the losses of the bombers to a total lack of resources.

Fighterbomber is always funny. It seems like he's well-respected. At least he's often quoted by pro-Russian commentators, and even sometimes by serious Western news outlets. But he's completely unhinged. Here's him wishing that the overnight strikes on Ukraine caused more suffering and destruction, and advocating for nuking Ukrainian cities:

  • Summary
  • Ukraine says Russia launched 407 drones and 45 missiles
  • Zelenskiy says attack wounded 49 people
  • Kremlin had warned of retaliation against Kyiv
  • Ukraine earlier attacked Russia's strategic bomber aircraft
KYIV, June 6 (Reuters) - Russia launched an intense missile and drone barrage at the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in the early hours of Friday and three people were killed, Ukrainian officials said, as powerful explosions reverberated across the country.

The attacks followed a warning from Russian President Vladimir Putin, conveyed via U.S. President Donald Trump, that the Kremlin would hit back after Ukrainian drones destroyed several strategic bomber aircraft in attacks deep inside Russia.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

Kyiv's military administration said three people were killed in the missile and drone salvo against the capital. They were first responders who had rushed to the scene of one of the strikes, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said.

"Overnight, Russia 'responded' to its destroyed aircraft... by attacking civilians in Ukraine.... Multi-storey buildings hit. Energy infrastructure damaged," Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X.

Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had carried out the strike on military and military-related targets in response to what it called Ukrainian "terrorist acts" against Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said 49 people nationwide had been injured in the attacks, which also struck several other towns and cities as well as Kyiv, as he called on Ukraine's Western allies to ramp up pressure on Russia.

The air force said Russia had used 407 drones, one of the largest numbers recorded in a single attack. Forty-five cruise and ballistic missiles were also fired, it said.

Kyiv's metro transport system was disrupted by a Russian strike that hit and damaged tracks between stations, the military administration said. The state rail company said it was also diverting some trains due to rail damage outside the city.

BOOMING EXPLOSIONS

Reuters witnesses reported a series of booming explosions powerful enough to rattle windows far from the impact sites.

Some Kyiv residents sought shelter in metro stations, or in underground car parks.

In the capital's Solomianskyi district, a Russian drone slammed into the side of an apartment building, leaving a gaping hole and burn marks, a Reuters photographer at the scene said.

Falling concrete blocks from the building crushed cars parked below. Two police investigators were examining what appeared to be the drone's engine.

Earlier in the night, Reuters reporters heard the sound of Russian kamikaze drones buzzing in the sky, accompanied by the sounds of outgoing fire from Ukrainian anti-aircraft batteries.

Zelenskiy called for concerted pressure on Russia.

"If someone is not applying pressure and is giving the war more time to take lives – that is complicity and accountability. We must act decisively," he wrote on X.

As well as Kyiv, Russian forces also struck industrial facilities and infrastructure in the western city of Ternopil, leaving parts of it without power, Mayor Serhii Nadal said.

The regional administration said the attack had injured 10 people and recommended that residents temporarily stay inside due to a high concentration of toxic substances in the air after a fire.

Fifteen people were injured in the northwestern city of Lutsk where an attack damaged private homes, educational institutions and a government building, prosecutors said.

The Ukrainian military said it had launched a pre-emptive strike overnight on the Engels and Dyagilevo airfields in the Russian regions of Saratov and Ryazan, in addition to striking at least three fuel reservoirs.

In one of the most audacious attacks of the three-year-old war between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian spies last weekend destroyed some of Russia's strategic bomber aircraft on the ground using quadrocopter drones hidden in wooden sheds.

After a phone conversation with Putin on Wednesday, Trump said the Kremlin was planning an unspecified response to the Ukrainian attack on the Russian air bases.

For Fighterbomber's safety I hope he doesn't live anywhere near Moscow when the MAD he so madly wishes for is in full swing.

Could sum up the whole war : Ukraine strikes at military targets to survive against an invasion, Russia hit civilians buildings to cause terror.

Three emergency service workers were among the killed during last night's "retaliation" bombing

And now about Ukrainians "not hitting" civilian targets.

Apartment building in Engels, Saratov region was damaged during today's Ukrainian attack.

In Kherson region, vehicle with 2 journalists of Zvezda channel was attacked by drone. One person wounded, car burned down.

In Rylsk, Kursk region, Ukrainian drone attacked private house, fire started.

Reports about another Patriot SAM destroyed by Iskander strike in Kiev.

Is this anyhow comparable? I am not going into details how are these Zvezda journalists innocent or whose private house is attacked.
You murder innocent people and in very small window you get punished. After more than three years of murders.

It isn't, but conflating propaganda workers in occupied Kherson with civilians in Kursk is done on purpose to promote the notion that Kherson is as inherently Russian as Kursk.

It's one of those subtle-but-obvious propaganda tricks and tactics you can observe coming from the Putin's alter ego regularly in this discussion.

Same as focusing on "liberating Donbass" narrative (as if it's somehow a 100% legit excuse no one ever questions) to shift attention from the fact that the "liberated" cities are unlivable piles of rubble with almost zero remaining citizens, as well as fresh Russian claims on two other Ukrainian oblasts that aren't Donbass.

The claim about a destroyed Patriot in Kyiv is a totally bogus and baseless claim from an obscure anonymous grifter account. No other semi-reliable source posted anything about it.

Meanwhile UA air force reports downing of a Russian Su-35 this morning over Kursk oblast.

UA news outlet "Militarnyi" posts a video of the downed airplane, Russian milbloggers in Telegram confirm the kill.

I've read that plane was providing CAS for Russian troops in Kursk region, which is still not completely "liberated" it seems.

On the topic of civilians, why don't you comment on this? https://www.hrw.org/news/2025/06/03/ukraine-russia-using-drones-attack-civilians

Kiev unexpectedly postpones acceptance of bodies, prisoner swap — top Russian negotiator

MOSCOW, June 7. /TASS/. Ukraine has unexpectedly moved to indefinitely postpone the acceptance of bodies and the exchange of prisoners of war, Russian Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky, who heads Moscow’s delegation to talks with Ukraine, said.

He pointed out that "on June 6, in strict accordance with the Istanbul agreements, Russia unilaterally launched a humanitarian mission to hand over 6,000 bodies of Ukrainian service members over to Ukraine, as well as exchange wounded and seriously ill prisoners and prisoners under the age of 25." "The first batch of 1,212 frozen bodies has arrived at the designated exchange point in refrigerator rail cars. The rest are about to arrive. In addition, the first list of 640 wounded, seriously ill and young prisoners has been handed over to Ukraine in order to begin the exchange process. The Russian Defense Ministry’s contact group is currently on the Ukraine border," he wrote on Telegram.

"However, Ukraine has unexpectedly moved to indefinitely postpone both the acceptance of bodies and the prisoner swap," Medinsky added.

They cannot exchange 6000 bodies for very simple reason, they don't have that many. And accepting unilateral return of bodies from Russia would be a bad PR.
But I have no doubts there will be a million excuses why they can't do it, denials and blaming Russia, as they always do.

If the Russian side is not recovering the bodies of their own dead, on ground Russia occupies, why should it be expected of the Ukranians? They no longer control the ground the Russian dead lie on.

It's kind of Kremlin's Big Propaganda Point behind the kind of tactics and attacks it insists on – how small, incremental gains of Ukranian ground, by seeding it with dead Russians, indicates "winning".

So what, if the Ukranians are not in possession of heaps of dead Russian bodies as a consequence? They are Russia's problem.

As usual, there is a massive cognitive dissonance at the heart of the Russian propaganda narrative – where the situation should be several mutually exclusive things at the same time, and everything is FUBAR anyway.

Ukraine has released a video showing the full flight of one of the drones used in operation "Spiderweb"

And it was just on time apparently, preventing what would have been the biggest air attack of the war (according to Russian sources)

Is this a new narrative you are being fed currently, after "stealing toilets" and "human wave attacks"?
Russian side returning 6000 Ukrainian dead but "not recovering bodies of their own" is a new low for your propaganda.
