Besides, I don't see how Russia losing is in the interest of China in the slightest. They'd lose an obvious ally in their own conflicts with the US.

I am not sure what is worse really, to think that a nuclear power will just play nice and not use far worse if it ever comes to risk losing, or to think that another nuclear power will sacrifice itself to defend a third country.
But I do know that if such are main positions, you sort of deserve a world war.

Where does the weird idea that the Russians aren't actually trying properly come from?

As for "Christian duty", by the count of the Moscow Patriarchy that is what they are doing, and by other counts the Russians have shown no such constraints so far.

Risk is always there. Not doing things encourages him though so increases the chance of nukes being used.

If he's going to push the button over the west supplying Ukraine (USA and USSR both supplied weapons eg Vietnam or Afghanistan) he's gonna push the button over some other stupid reason.

The fact he needs to even threaten basically shows him up to be a bully and full of crap.

I suspect he can't win a nuclear war either.

The fight in Ukraine is also so that there won't need to be any such decision over Estonia, or anywhere else, hypothetically even Greece...

I think that was more of a swipe back after Sweden demonstrated support for the Uighurs than anything to do with Russia.
