SCOTUS Nomination II: I Like Beer

Now that Kavanaugh is seated on the Court, 538 published a story on how he will change the balance. The conclusion is not much. Kennedy was seen as the swing Justice but he was actually very conservative. The moderate reputation comes from a handful of high profile cases where he sided with the liberals, notably on gay and lesbian rights. On close cases, he voted conservative over 70% of the time.

But he full-on doubles the number of know sexual assaulters on the highest court in the land.

Unlike Kennedy, he is there for his known willingness to legislate from the bench. The difference isn't in conservative position, the difference is in how willing he is to be used to overturn the rule of law in favor of that position.

Bezos also thinks long term. Trump can barely think as far as his next nap. Bezos was practically begged to sell Amazon when the Dot Com Bubble burst, but refused because "it will turn around, and I'll make more in the end." Trump declares bankruptcy more often than Greece.
Actually, didn't Germany declare bankruptcy more often than Greece? But I concur to your point. And world politics certainly is more interesting now than it has been, things are in motion and some change is upcoming.
It's quite common for countries to get kneedeep into fecal matter or even outright bankrupting themselves by winning wars.
Let alone losing them.
Greece owes its reknown to an unusual abilility to bankrupt itself in all manner of peaceful circumstances.
Which i suppose is the edge of HoloDoc's joke.

"1824, 1843, 1860, 1890, 1932." And effectively roughly 2011.
(I'm just quoting Al Murray, i can't be bothered to look up this nonsense.)

Your move.

I think Greece shouldn't declare bankruptcy. It should declare solvency. It's always functionally bankrupt, so it should have to declare when it isn't.

Kennedy was conservative, but he wasn't a rapist and didn't threaten "fire and fury" to the "left", "the Clintons", or "Soros". Kennedy was conservative, but he wasn't a neo-Nazi in disguise.

He might have a similar effect as Kennedy would have, all told. Kennedy was confirmed 97 - zero. That's a pretty big difference in perceived legitimacy

The Roberts Court shredded it's legitimacy in record time to the point where Roberts himself is concerned that his Court won't have enough legitimacy for his record to stand. His place in history as the worst Chief Justice since Tanney is already assured. But if he doesn't patch back together at least some semblance of legitimacy, then his legislative record will be overturned all the sooner.

This is Washington. Perception is reality entirely too often.

It's probably worth noting that Kavanaugh was Kennedy's choice to succeed him.

Go to Timmy's for skis w/ Judge, Tom, PJ, Bernie, Squi' - Kavanaugh's calendar entry for July 1st 1982

There were four boys I remember being there: Brett Kavanaugh, Mark Judge, P.J. Smyth, and one other boy whose name I cannot recall. - Dr. Ford's testimony

Here's where I am skeptical. As far as I know, he proferred the calendar. Do we really think he'd have forwarded it if he'd recorded the day he and Judge allegedly molested Ford on it?

Yes. He spent a great deal of time deliberately mischaracterizing the calendar itself. He gambled that if he told enough convincing lies that the half of his audience was speaking to would believe his story and evidence and give him a pass.

That's exactly what ended up happening.

If he hadn't spent so much time lying about the calendar and mischaracterizing his life at that point in time I would agree with you. Moreover, there is the distinct possibility that he simply doesn't remember assaulting Ford and thus would still put the calendar out there. Even then, he knew about the party but deliberately avoided mentioning it by way of claiming that weekdays were no time for partying and therefore the party was not a party. Why would he spend so much effort on being disingenuous if he didn't know the calendar poked huge holes in his own story? He gambled that he could tell the big lie and spin it to make his fellow travelers believe him and he won.

He didn't need them to believe it. All he needed to do was say stuff under oath that, if true, would make it impossible to claim he was guilty. Then they could go ahead and confirm him like they had planned to all along.

The fact that none of it was true, and that in fact a lot of it wasn't even credible on its face never mattered. The calendar was just like the rest of his testimony in that regard.
