Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

I ran into those justicars again, but this time they were neutral. I'm not sure why they were hostile the first time.

Out of curiosity are there any factions that are mutually exclusive? So far I've done the mages guild, and I'm working on the thieves guild right now. I know about the companions, and maybe stormcloaks? I haven't been to their places yet.

So what determines if companions are killed or just yield, and kneel (and get back up later)?

I don't know why they get killed by enemies, it might have something to do with the specific enemy and their perks. I found a pile of ashes with Lydia's name after a battle with a lightning wielding mage, I guess he had 'Desintegrate'. She usually dies by my hand and more often than not it's her own fault, throwing herself between me and an enemy just before I unleash a power attack
I've alwas reloaded after her death. I'm not too cheap to hire a new companion, but I use her as a mule to carry valuable and heavy loot, and she always dies in remote places.

Did you loot them ? I got attacked by three Justiciars and one of them had an execution order for me for meddling in their affairs.
I've attacked their patrols, but that was after they sent the hit squad.
I'm not sure what I did to piss them off, I suspect it's the way I handled the Forsworn conspiracy sidequest in Markath.
Spoiler :

I killed Madanach.

Anyway, I'm a loyal and patriotic citizen of the Empire who thinks the treaty with the Aldmeri Dominion is a disgrace. When I think I can get away with killing Thalmor, I'll gladly do it.

What is the deal with the Thalmor anyway? They always seem to cause trouble whenever I meet one of them.

The backstory helps to understand the whole Thalmor thing. But really they're a different empire from a different island who are in a fragile truce with the Empire and are working to squash the Empire eventually and prove their (elven) superiority.

About companions: Do they become less effective with time? I'm now level 33 and it seems Lydia can rarely sustain more than one hit or two before she goes to "kneel/yield".

I'm level 30 and she's doing just fine. Did you give her any good equipment ?

Are all dragons resistant to fire or something? It seems I have to switch to shock magic for decent damage.

Running into Elder Dragons all the time at the moment. Persistent buggers, they are.

My friend said he fought a lot of fire dragons. Guess it's random.

Still, I imagine that every dragon resists what it breathes, like in D&D.

Most dragons I fought actually breathed ice.

Yeah, like he said, that's the dragon I was having trouble burning recently.

So finally got around to trying this game some (on my brother's PS3 copy, I'm not getting Skyrim til X-Mas on my budget). Seems a marked improvement on Oblivion so far (mostly on the ground that I no longer have to max out my Mathematics skill before actually doing anything with my character)

LOL at mathematics skill.

Most of the dragons I've fought breathed fire, just luck of the draw I suppose. I'm running into Blood dragons now. The elder dragons I hear about scare me.

I finally got around to checking the o-boards. The usual whines and complaints. It's funny though that it's not until I see other complaints about the game that I see them too. That's why I try to avoid the o-boards on many games. Plus I don't like spoilers. I ruined many things on Dragon Age by looking at the o-boards too much. But I do agree the game has balance issues with level scaling and all that. I hope they can fix that up better.

I also hear that destruction magic is useless on the highest difficulty at high level. I don't play high difficulty, so I'm not too worried about it. But I have invested heavily in destruction magic, and I do see its limitations. If I fight more than 2 mobs, I will run out of magicka. I really think magic is underpowered in this game. I'm hearing you should invest in conjuration, which I haven't done so far. Maybe I should start pumping that skill.

Speaking of companions, why won't they wear the equipment I give them sometimes? I'm pretty sure it's better than what they have, but they won't equip it.

Also, what do the little triangles mean besides a piece of equipment in my companion or my inventory?

I think the triangles mean that the thing in question gives you higher armor/damage than what you are currently equipped with. I guess even the stuff in your companion's inventory is compared to what you have equipped on yourself.

Wikis and forums completely ruined KOTOR and Dragon Age for me. I found out about Revan before I even got off of the first planet. Ugh.

I'm going to go with conjuration, alteration, and a melee weapon of some kind.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and say that it either needs to be ranked a higher tier than their current gear or be worth more gold. Try whichever one you aren't.

So true... I take my helmet off alot of the time because my nord looks so much more awesome that way.

Are all dragons resistant to fire or something? It seems I have to switch to shock magic for decent damage.

If it breathes fire it has 50% fire resistance and 25% frost weakness, vice versa for ice breathers.

Fought a dragon and the bastard ran away. Screw that cabbage patch.

Anyway I am hugely annoyed that they needlessly complicated power leveling. The whole point of TES games for me was intentionally starting with the most wretched and pathetic character (jails and other stat lowering) so I can mindlessly grind them into walking gods, maxing out attributes and mastering almost every skills through a variety of ingenious and semi-******** ways, living off the streets and odd jobs. Then I would finish all the major/minor quests and when I was done I would don my Daedric Armour and mount my armoured steed to slaughter every single non-respawning NPC in the game. In this game there can be a max of 80 or so perks and the moronic leveling system is still implemented in a manner of sorts. Spells are crippled at later levels for the player due to fixed damage. (enemies keep on scaling) And the list goes on and on. Consolized to the max. Le sigh.

You can still abuse the game though thanks to Alchemic Smithchanting which are probably the best skillset in the game to have. But it is an annoying go-around to do. TES 5: Smithchanting and some other skilles.
