Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

Alchemy is very good for non mage characters, but I think it' kind of redundand for mages except if you want to make a lot of money (which you can also do by enchanting rings from transmuted iron).
How useful is Ilusion btw ? I only use Fury because my Altmer started with it, but I reckon since spell effects are limited by the enemy's level Illuion spells become obsolete faster than Destruction spells. A lot of perks say they make spells effective against higher level enemies, but they don't say how high.

How high is +10 levels. Even at level 50 you can Pacify a Dwarven Centurion if you Dual Cast it with the perk. I find it OP, actually, even without the Calm, Fear or Rage spells, you can just cast Invisibility all you want, that's invulnerability right there.

What do you mean major ?
Some skill trees call for maxing and some only have a couple of early useful perks.
My mage only has perks in the mage skills minus Illusion, and he's still doing OK (lvl 22 atm). I can't imagine how a robe weaing melee mage would be feasible given how easily they die.
You should invest at least in Conjuration and get Elemental Potency for better Atronach tanks.

He could conjure some arm-

Muffle makes the silent armor perks worthless, invisibility makes half of the sneak perks worthless, and the silent casting perk makes strategy when sneaking worthless. Bethesda didn't even try to balance magic, all they did was remove chameleon and crafting your own spells.

Yeah, but the thing is, he didn't really describe his character as much of a mage. All the info we got was that he used 1-handed weapons and wore robes :dunno:

I figured he could use some way to heal himself with all the damage he'll be taking. So, Restoration or Alchemy. Alchemy is also good for coating weapons in poison and whatnot.

Is Alchemy not a mage thing? Who cares what category the game puts it in. The way the skills are divided up are forced for the sake of unnecessary symmetry and are completely contrived (same can be said for the spell effects in each magic skill as well).

As well as unlock, cure disease and other utility spells. I'm severely disappointed with the minimal selection in Skyrim.

Wow, how easy it is to level Illusion. The first time I used Muffle I gained one rank. I cast it again and again while searching for Nirnroots and I went from 30 to 90 in about half an hour.
Ridiculous.

I noticed that too, GS. I think it may be a bug; spells that don't require a target usually require a lot more casting to level up, but some Illusion spells don't seem to have this.

Transmute is pretty crazy too since you're already spending that half hour crafting 30 suits of armor.

Haven't played in ages but I leveled Alchemy all the way up because it allowed me to buff Enchanting to max with enchanting potions, which in turn allowed me to make maxed out weapons and armor.

My mage doesn't have any Alchemy perrks, and starting at level 30 seems a bit late. how slow doe characters level after they hit 50 ? I've never played one character long enough to find out.

And where are the Thalmor when you need them ? I have blood from all elf races except Altmer. And the Uttering Hills cave is occupied by human bandits. The worst thing is that I'm an Altmer myself. Why can't I just prick my thumb with a dagger ?

I could raid the Thalmor embassy, but it feels so wrong today...

I didn't pick up any sneak perks till level 40. It's never too late to partake in imbalance.

There are three Thalmor in Understone Keep if it's controlled by the Empire. A Thalmor wizard with a couple of Justiciars (usually with a prisoner) seem to be one of the most common random encounters.

It's not the skills themselves that go slower AFAIK, but the levels themselves take more "xp"

That's my problem as well, though it could be related to me being a battlemage with light armor who's never been to Winterhold for destruction training. Why does it level up so slowly, and why can other mages literally spam Ice Storm? I may not have a lot of health, but it shouldn't be 1-hit killing me when I'm a werewolf or don't have 80% magicka/frost resist (stacked). I know I have a mod that augments destruction but I can't one-hit kill a single damn humanoid, and my destruction's at 55 and the mage that kept killing me had 70. I'm a freakin Breton! This should not be happening.

With Breton, enchanting high enough, the Shield of Solitude disenchanted (a stronger resist magic enchantment) and resist magic potions you can get your magic resistance temporarily to 100%. That makes everything that uses magic as their primary weapon (including Dragon Priests) a piece of cake..

I'm gunning for Atronach, but otherwise I'm far too lazy to min-max my enchantments.

Completing a quest at the temple in Riften also gets you an amulet that helps you resist magic.

Amulet ?
Passive ability !
You permanently gain 15% magic resistance.
My Altmer mage has 60% magic resistance regardless of equipment
15 from Agent of Mara, 25 from the Lord's Stone, and 20 from the Alteration perks.

Since Fallout 3 came out Oct 2008, last DLC released Aug 2009, and GOTY released Oct 2009;

And Oblivion came out in Mar 2006, last DLC released in Mar 2007, and GOTY released Sept 2007;

is it fair to assume that Skyrim's GOTY will be released around 1.5 years after its release, i.e. Summerish 2013?

EDIT: Sorry, forgot that New Vegas was Obsidian. Changed the dates to FO3.

Looks like they just announced a new DLC. Solstheim, looks like a bit of Morrowind stuff thrown in, I dearly hope this thing is a bit better than the previous DLC, and my hope rests on the fact that they'll try to pander to the Morrowind fans (like me!).

Although I won't be as hopeful with the storyline.

Since it is taking place in Solstheim, it only makes sense that we'll see a bunch of Dunmer stuff. I'm actually kind of hopeful about the storyline. It looks like we'll learn more about the Dragon cult as well as Apocrypha.
