SPORE SimEarth game

I expect the game to be far more varied than that, though I understand your fears that gameplay will become repetitive. However, I am the type of person who still finds playing on the Aquarium world in SimEarth to be fun, so even if the game is repetitive, I doubt that it will grow boring, at least for me.

From the initial GDC 05 presentation I see little change. They obviously removed the creature-water phase which looked simular to the non-water creature phase but with 3-axis movement. Unless they kept fully functioning flight in the original out-of-water phase(which looks to be reduced to gliding) the water phase would have been more advanced feeling gameplay-wise that would feel seem resricted once on land. Also, being simular in gameplay meant you would do the same thing for two phases in a row which would bore the average person looking to advance to something new at the end of a phase. The only option there would be to merge the two into one creature phase, and it looks as if they didn't do that. Likely a time saving choice that may be added in the future.

The only other change is the merging of the city and civ phases which only makes sense. Even in civilization we focus our time on building the cities up while also taking over our rivals. The city aspect of the game was too simple even in '05 to really be a whole phase to itself.

Personally I don't see any major changes to the game that make it any worse than what originally wowwed me back in 2005. The only major change is that I've been seeing the same game for the past 3 years and have gotten used to the overall concept. Add to that the potential for over expectation due to other fans imagining what might be possible without any real proof and you have the risk of the current game no longer being as amazing as one remembers.

I for one await its release.

The shallow game play doesn't concern me at all as I see the focus being primarily on creating.

I really consider Spore to be like the first SimCity. A kind of proof of concept. Perhaps they'll have civilization eras like the Classical or Industrial ages or include something deeper with Spore 2000 or beyond but for now, I'm absolutely ecstatic that there is an actual application in which such a game concept works.

I certainly know that I'm going to enjoy making my own units and exploring unique planets.

Yes, and creators from this site tag their work with 'civfanatics'.

BTW, I have a Public Service Announcement to make.

The user 'Green' has become a featured creator entirely by stealing other players creations, resizing the eyes, renaming and tagging them, and taking credit for them as his own. For example, look at Green's Cheeky, then compare it to User 'Regalia's Snuffles. Regalia's actually an excellent creator, by the way, check out some of his stuff. But that's getting off topic.

As a group, I feel it is our responsibility to vote down his stolen animals, vote up the originals, created by the hard work of other Sporeans, and report his work. We need to stomp down on this kind of behaviour now!

Good work! Now we need to petition for a Spore forum and put a database of people's sites.

Aww man, none of my uploaded creatures have the civfanatics tag.

Good ethics point, but strictly all creation are the property of Maxis, so I don't wait up at night worrying about issues like this. Just as bad is making critters ripping off the work done by the Nintendo artists and others. :raises hand: "I'm guilty".
In the end only EA is going to be going to the bank on this.
