State of the Union

The speech itself I didn’t get any big “Axis of Evil” vibes, that is anything memorable that’s going to stick in our minds long after the speech. That’s the last SOTU I remember having any lasting mental imagery.

Pelosi’s tearing of the speech pages though was stupid on her part. Do the political math: what percent of Republicans think it was bad? 100%*. What percent of Democrats think it was good? Not 100%.

*nobody cares what Mitt Romney thinks.

I have really mixed feelings about the strategy. I am not interested in the right courting minority votes by playing the left's game. Trying to capture voting blocs with gimmes? Free health care for illegals and the rest of the santa claus bs? The GOP will never beat the Democrats at that. It doesn't have to, either. They've become two fundamentally different parties; people identify with or vote for them for apple/orange reasons.

Tough luck with that: Trump is not the GOP and will do whatever it takes to be reelected. And he's smart at this, he's doing all the right things to achieve that. Just has to hold the economy from crashing before the end of the year. The GOP? He'll drag the whole lot by the nose.
I fully expect Trump to do (or at least promise) his own medicare for all thing if he feels really pressed by the summer (say, if Bernie manages to defeat the DNC). And the GOP will vote it obediently.

Mitt just wants to run in 2024. So it was still self interest voting like he did. Trump will have no hold on the party once he's not president anymore.

I dont think that matters anymore, Trump is up to 16K lies already

It's symbolic of the whole term. Trump wins and the Democrats destroying something in frustration.
It is truly unreal that people still call him incompetent. It shows a lack of both objectivity and understanding. J

The GOP rank and file are not going to vote for sore loser Mitt. He blew it in 2012 and he’ll be 77 in 2024.

she decided to become little more than a partisan troll from an elevated position. The protests of the Democratic members also reached a new low for the House. Pelosi did not gavel out the protest. She seemed to join it.

For those of us who truly love the House as an institution, it was one of the lowest moments to unfold on the floor. That is why I argue in the Hill that, if Pelosi does not apologize and agree to honor the principle of neutrality and civility at the State of the Union, she should resign as speaker.

Shocked there's not a thread about this. Or did I just miss it?
Was it that nobody here watched it?
Nobody here cares
We caught a few minutes a couple of times between recorded shows that we were watching since my wife refused to watch that travesty.

What were you thoughts.
On a side note, the Sun just rose here and Trump took credit for it.
It's a great Sun.

How about Nancy ripping up the speech as he finished.
Now as much as I despise trump and thought the speech was a farce, I think her action was a bit overboard and a little childish.
What about you.
I'm sure we'll be hearing about it for a week or so.

How about that pasty white Dem rebuttal?

I tried to watch it. Wife kept coming in the room and talking over it. I saw enough of it that I don't really want to watch a replay to see what I missed.
I thought Trump and Pelosi both acted childishly.

I have no real opinion about giving Rush the Medal of Freedom (although it does seem a bit much.) Giving it to him during the SOTU wasn't appropriate and it was more like Rush was just being exploited to piss off the Dems. Having him as the President's guest and giving him a shout-out and general well-wishes woulda been fine.

Since the invention of the camera and the microphone.

I’d bet any money for the at least the first 100 years of our republic that Congress was tanked while in session.

Noble statesmen, yes, but still people at the end of the day.

Seems very unlikely he would make a health care proposal while the Democrats hold the House. That caucus is no ordinary, "loyal opposition" front, either.

LOL...I just read that during the SOTU Dingbat Don awarded the Medal of Freedom to...

wait for it...

Rush Limbaugh.

Bet you didn't see that coming.

Okay Trump apologists, tell us what a great choice that was.

That's what makes it a great move: whatever Trump proposes the democrats will oppose. Meaning they alienate a sizeable portion of their one base if it looks live Trump is proposing some kind of M4A/universal healthcare. This is already an issue splitting the democrats. While even among the republicans more people admit that the current private insurance "market" is a failure. I don't know how it'd net out but if Trump is losing in the campaign, this move can at the very least overturn the tables and make all other issues secondary: won't make his situation worse and may make it much better.
The only opponent it won't work against is Sanders because he's all for it anyway and would have no problem in advancing a M4A even with Trump while fighting him on other issues. The other potential candidates do not want to change the healthcare situation despite saying they do.

I felt a bit sorry for Rush. He's gotta know he doesn't really deserve that particular honor was just being used.

The protests of the Democratic members also reached a new low for the House. Pelosi did not gavel out the protest. She seemed to join it.

What protests? There were no Democratic protests to gavel out. There were only GOP cheers as the speech ended. :dubious:

She just quietly stood up and, with dignity, shredded Trump's pack of lies. Pense, standing next to Pelosi, was unaware of her actions until told about them later. She did not stand up and, in the finest GOP tradition, bellow out "You lie!" in the middle of the speech. :shake:

I don’t mind posing with symbolic resistance but when Pelosi does it backfires because she has no credibility and reeks of hypocrisy. She tries to impeach Trump on the least potent charge of literally thousands while she votes for his massively overblown war budget and gives him a blank check in power to go bomb whomever he wants whenever he wants. She let him pass a huge trade deal win like the day after she impeach him.

Like Crystal on Hill Rising said it’s not resistance – it’s theatre. Ineffective, no self-damaging theatre. Trump is at his highest approval rating to date. Just like Kyle Kulinsky suggested when Pelosi and her useless crew chose the most impotent, bogus, dead-in-the-senate and self-serving charge they could find to impeach Trump. Now Trump is more popular than ever while they tied up the senators Bernie and Warren on this crap in the crucial beginning of the Primaries. Why? So Pelosi could slowly pose and sign the impeachment with 20 different pens to hand out to her friends and donors so they feel real special.
