Sullla's AI Survivor Season Eight - Begins 31 May 2024 at 1200 EST

Hannibal has probably been the unluckiest leader in the last few seasons with his terrible starts. I think the fact that he manages to remain in the game so to speak as long as he does speaks to how strong of a leader he is and I think if he was handed stronger starts he would rack up some wins.

Zara and Justinian have also been handed some unlucky starts the last 2/3 seasons

If you read the alternate histories, Justinian's past two starts have actually been quite good for him; he just got unlucky with the events in the actual games.

You can make a decent point with all Zara's jungle starts in Season 6, but his start was perfectly serviceable last season. He just played it terribly.

The "unlucky Hannibal" narrative isn't one I had thought of before these discussions, but I can see it now.

I'm working on it now. I'll post it up in a day or two. Meanwhile, My may have something ready for us by then for the casino stuff. (No rush young lady ;) - I can always add your stuff in later when it is ready)

@Plains-Cow shall we get a Game 1 thread up?

Would be good to discuss picks - not an easy one for me!

@Fippy - will you be treating us to your casino again this year?
If you're already making a thread, I'll leave it to you, lymond, unless you'd like me to do something.

I've already got it drafted, but certainly open to suggestions later. I'm just following the usual format we've been using for a long time.

How soon can we expect it? I'm already chomping at the bit.

Soon :)

Been doing some testing to get a feel for the leader setups because I am a geek. Just had one of the silliest endings to a game involving the game 2 leaders which would probably cause a riot in the twitch chat if it happens in the real game.

To set the scene:

- Down to the final two leaders, Ghenghis Khan and Catherine.
- GK is bigger with 37 cities compared to Catherine who is on 25 cities.
- GK is over the domination land limit by 2% but short of the population limit by 4%. Most cities are mature and Catherine has more Future Tech so the population percentages are unlikely to change much.
- Catherine has been marginally ahead in tech the whole game and manages to beat GK to launching a spaceship.
- Catherine's spaceship is due to land in 3 turns. Her capital is safely in her interior and her power is close enough to GK that it would probably take a while before border cities start to fall. GK is not plotting in any case so it looks like Catherine has got the win in the bag after 3 turns. All she needs to do is just chill....

Instead, Catherine decides in her infinite wisdom that this would be a great time to launch a final war against GK even though he is slightly ahead in power and has nukes. During the first turn of the war GK nukes a bunch of Catherine's cities which decimates the population in those cities. Without any cities actually changing hands, GK's population ends up exactly reaching the domination population limit and GK gets the domination victory.

First time I have seen nukes literally win the game.

@Fippy What price will the casino offer for that outcome in game 2? :P

@Eauxps I. Fourgott Interesting write up of your thoughts. What made you let Alex go for only 31g when you said that he was your no. 1 priority and you were going to bid up to 50g for him? You ended up with the biggest team so it can't all be bad :P

Thanks Mania! I think it was a combination of generally having spent a fairly high amount of gold recently, and having already had the auction already go rather differently from my plans (I lost Churchill who I'd also been targeting, and got both JC and Saladin at large prices, neither of whom I'd expected to have a shot at). By that point I was more willing to break from the original plan, and it didn't seem worth spending that much on a leader whose chances I was feeling increasingly skeptical about.

Wasn't my original plan, but I'm happy with how everything turned out.

Oh dear...
