Symbols

Symbols can be very important. Knowing what symbols a person holds important can tell you a lot. For me, on of the most important is this (and I can't believe no one else has posted it before now):

Don't be offended by the following comments... but in the Netherlands, it is generally unacceptable if people wear national flags (as badges) on CASUAL clothing, since it is associated with nationalism and closely related with racism.
If used in ceremonies, special occasions and professional ways it is not really and issue.
It was quite strange thing to me to see the stars and stripes on virtually every piece of public property in NYC. I've never seen such a display of national pride in any other country, except China offcourse.

Actually, according to US Flag Etiquette, the same holds true here. :)
The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:

  • The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
  • The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
  • The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard
  • The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.
  • The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
  • The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
There are a lot of patriotic Americans who are not aware of the rules for flag usage. All we can try to do is educate them. :)

This did remind me of a few more symbols that help define me.

Below the belt but . So true!!!!

Also, about the 'message for aliens' picture of mankind: How stupid is that!!? It's like saying "Here we are! This is where to find us if you want to annihilate us and take over our planet, just take a right past the 4th big plantery body and you'll find us waiting like suckers."

It represents balance. I've adopted parts of Taoism into my way of life. Very small parts.

This is a symbol I made for myself. I draw this everywhere, on papers, desks, and I use it as an avatar/flag usually.

For those who don't know, the Gallic rooster is a symbol of France because it's an animal which sing while he has its two feet in the dung.
