Right now, the canadian dollar is worth about .942$ american. Does that mean that canadian prices will become virtually the same as american prices, give a few cents or $?

Prices won't change, but Americans buying Canadian stuff will have to pay more to compensate the change loss.

So to put it simple, more canadians will buy american stuff, and less americans will buy canadian stuff.

Edit: and by the way, according to certain experts, both currencies might reach equal value by the end of the year.

It means if you buy something priced in American dollars you won't have to pay much more than the price listed.

It also means that a lot of Canadian companies that rely on American customers are going to start losing business.

and interest rates are going up. A number of financial people predict complete parity by the end of 2007.

But what about the prices on the box, or whatever? Usally, if the american pirce is about 20$, the canadian one is about 25$. So will we pay 20$ and a couple of cents, or 25$?

What are you talking about exactly? I don't recall buying anything with prices both in US and CAD on the box.
If it was the case then the merchant would probably only change his tag, if he would raise the US value or lower the CAD value is completely up to him.

Edit, if you are in Canada and a mechant sells in USD, then you will pay 20 dollars an a couple of cents.

Check books and magazines. It's the only place I ever see it.

And yeah, the exchange rate is sucking right now. From the first time I visited my (tobe) wife in Toronto to last month when I left Ottawa for the summer, things (for me) have gone up 25% in cost.

Books and Magazines do. :p

But I think in that case there's more to it than just exchange rates.

(damn you Augurey ;))

Really? I keep on seeing them. Not as tags, but being made with the box, useally close to the bar code, or in the corner.

I know this is a book, but it has both prices (top left corner).

Incidentally, many Americans just think that means the book is just 50% more in Canada. The idea of a different currency escapes them. They're pretty stupid.

Which is why the Canadian government needs to inflate its dollar against the US Dollar. The .8:1.0 was a decent rate.

oooh, I get it, then in that case you are really getting screwed up, the merchant will sell you the book for 24 dollars and make profit out of the exchange rate.
I would suggest you buy yourself 16 american dollars (for like 17,50 CAD$) and buy the book in USD.

Don't think they give you the option. It's not 16 USD or 24 CAD in Canada. It's 24 CAD in Canada or the US equivalent of 24 CAD. The price disparity (as noted by norseone) is due in part, to the shipping costs.

It's nice to see you abroad, badmouthing our country.

Corrected; augurey had two posts in a row and I quoted the second one by mistake.

It's nice to see you abroad, badmouthing our country.

I'm in Ohio for the summer. And I'm badmouthing stupid Americans I've run across, not the country. Though there's something to be said about the permissibility of ignorance within the American education systems.

When I took calls for Cingular (yes they outsourced some of their call centres to Canada, the horror), do you know how few Americans knew what I meant by 'Ontario'? JonnyB had the same problem with 'Alberta'

People ask you what State that's in. You would never have a Canadian ask you what province Ohio is in. Not even the equally as stupid ones.
