The Fate of the Two-Party System in America

What will come of the defeat of the Democrats?

  • Eventually, the Democrats will re-emerge as a winning party.

    Votes: 48 51.6%
  • The Republicans shall become the sole party.

    Votes: 5 5.4%
  • Once the Dems die, the Republicans shall split, restoring two-party politics.

    Votes: 13 14.0%
  • Once the Dems die, another party (Green, Reform, Libertarian) shall rise up to replace it.

    Votes: 7 7.5%
  • Something else (maybe involving three major parties?)

    Votes: 20 21.5%

  • Total voters
    93
At first I looked at the first page, and was like "WTF..."...and then saw the dates. I think there's potential to split in both parties:

Republicans would split into an Evangelical Christian/Radical Conservative Party and a Moderate Conservative Party.

Democrats would split 3 times. So-called Blue Dogs would join the MCs, and then a split into Protectionist/Radical Liberals and a Moderate Liberal Party.

Trouble is... then they'd consolidate again somehow into two. Maybe the moderates could join and make a centrist party? It seems unlikely.

Why do any of you agonise over the details of the strategy between the "parties" when they are pretty much the same and work together anyway?

I think Obama will win unless something big happens. People just aren't excited by McCain. Although, if Obama's connections with all of those radicals didn't hurt him, then nothing will.

Neo-conism has already destroyed the republican party. It's just a matter of time before it completely dies off and cannot compete. They have no legs to stand on. Capitalism in general is starting to fall apart. Look at all the banks & mortgage companies being bailed out. The repugs are just as socialistic as that democrats, they're just worse at it.

The US will become more socialist while hopefully less interventionist abroad. People will see the need for energy independence & environmental regulation (though probably too late). The individualistic, consumptive, greed-driven way of life will crash like the stock market in 1929 or Rush Limbagh's poor (yet rich) sad ass keeling over of a heart attack and people will be forced to change. There's no way the republican party will survive. By 2012, they'll end up with less support than Ron Paul. I voted "something else" though because it isn't likely the Democrats will be overly loved either. Alot of the unsustainability of the modern industrial world will begin to show (it's been subtlety showing for 50 years or so but America doesn't "do" subtle much anymore) and many of the entitlements people take for granted will start to disappear & people will be angry & Obama will take much of the blame. The two-party system cannot survive the economic collapse that will occur within the next couple of decades.

He prob. means the weather underground.
I saw a documentary about them on YouTube (7 parts or something). I think their actions (post-bomb going off in their apartment) were pretty sweet. The fact that they were never caught but turned themselves in years later was even sweeter. People just don't have the balls to do that type of . .. .. .. . anymore, they just goto the movies & watch Bruce Willis & call it a day.

Time makes fools of us all.

There is no reason to believe that either the Democrats or Republicans will disolve anytime in the near future and it is apathy that assures it.

Can Godwynn comeback and bump this in a few years? :)

Neo-conism destroyed Neo-conism, not the Republican party.

The fact that neo-conservatives were allowed to hijack the republican party doesn't speak too favorably about the republican party.

That may be true. But capitalism is going nowhere. It will just, if we are lucky, operate within a more rational set of rules.

True.

In reality, the average American will end up getting more and more conservative or if there is a massive shift in political thought due to some radical occurence, more and more liberal. Becoming centrist is not an option. We'll always have two parties..they'll just be the same except on stupid issues which don't affect the governance of the nation (abortions, homosexual marriage, etc, etc).

The general public in the US has been moving steadily, but quite slowly, left. ( Call it the Will and Grace Effect ;) ) In that many "left" positions are becoming mainstream. But at the same time the right has become more vocal, more radical, and more politically connected. So you hear from the right more. but they are becoming less relevant in every day lives on the American people.

That has been my observation also (since I've started following politics in the least, about five years).
