If everyone who opted in could pm me the coordinates they want displayed on the map, that would be awesome. It can be as precise as you want, but keep in mind that you probably don't want people knowing where you live *exactly*. I'd just use the centre of whichever city you happen to live in or your favourite team's stadium or whatever. I think there's also a couple cases of people sharing a city? You know who you are so go with your general neighbourhood or whatever. Use your best judgement.

The actual coordinates will not be displayed and most of the time the map is going to be zoomed out, but this is going to be out in the open so just realize that somebody could easily figure out the gps coordinates associated with your username.

You can use this tool to get rather exact longitude and latitude coordinate data for your location

edit: if you don't feel like it, or whatever, this is not required. It just makes things easier for me aka "would be awesome"

Can't I just say "Albuquerque, NM"? Or do I have top go to all the trouble to find and post: 36 06 17 N 106 37 43 W?

This is what you will receive in the mail:

How big is that thing? Does it sit up by itself?

Somewhere between Finland and Aussieland, which is to say, I'd think, somewhere on earth ><
It's too bad we couldn't send it up to the International Space Station for Chris Hadfield to take a picture (he's Canadian, and a really cool astronaut). :p

That might be hard to actually read.
Then get Mrs. Birdjaguar to write it. You both can't have terrible handwriting!

Anyone who has ever posted a photo of themselves on civfanatics or facebook has already been compromised.
No picture of me exists anywhere online. Even the human holding my cat in my avatar isn't me.

The yeti is a good idea and all, but will he be ok to get his picture taken with Valka's cougar? :p
I AM NOT TAKING A PICTURE OF A COUGAR!!!!

:gripe: :gripe: :gripe:

Well, you don't have to, it's just that I am looking for data to plug into the database that I'm setting up.. and that site I linked gives me the exact formatting for the numbers that I need for the google maps API. So if a bunch of people email me some numbers, I'll just plug those in. Then the rest I can hunt down and do manually later. Easy data is good data, when you're developing

I got you covered, either way. You are in the matrix

Well, the wikipedia page for your city should have good cords.

Well, the books are standard sizes. It's not big. It sits by itself, yes.

I can do it for everyone.

I'd really appreciate one of the Aussies driving to the center and having that feller's pic taken atop Ayer's Rock.

If you pay for the fuel and accommodation, I could do that.

Awesome. I have some initial data from a couple people already, which is all I need for now, but pretty soon it will be possible to update everything using an online interface. Valka D'Ur had a great idea too - just use the coordinates of wherever the photo was taken.. Obviously that data isn't available yet, but it will be easy to change

Why not the location the photo was taken? That's probably not usually going to be where you live.

I'd leave it up to the poster.

Giving this until Friday to get any more posters who might wish to sign up. I'll work out ordering then.

I don't care where anyone lives. I demand photo-taking locations. I need to know where to find the cougars.

Only if you post the coordinates of every one of your items of furniture and lamps.

I won't be taking the second picture in the sanctuary, not with a stuffed yeti that could fall in the lake or get dirty/damaged.

If you pay for the fuel and accommodation, I could do that.

I also selflessly volunteer to drive to the middle of the outback for a photograph if someone else will foot the bill.

If I happen to be on a trip somewhere else in the world, would you accept multiple photos? Maybe one per country or something. I doubt that'd happen, but who knows

As long as the yeti is mailed on rather quickly, totally okay with me

*looks up which of the nearby zoos have cougars*

I like Lucy's idea of giving the location where the photo was taken. With the downtown as a backup in case you do take a picture of your living room and don't want that posted.

I was planning on taking a photo of me holding the yeti beside my computer monitor showing this thread with the picture of the yeti.

YOU COULD DO THAT ANYWHERE

Only if you post the coordinates of every one of your items of furniture and lamps.

If everyone provides the coordinates of their photos, I'll post the coordinates of every one of my items of furniture and lamps.

Hey guys, we have a working site! Let's call it version 0.18. It's basically just a map that shows you the path contre has entered that the Yeti will be travelling down. Whenever a new person is added or a location changes, the path map changes dynamically. And I should say "will enter", because right now I've just got coordinates that 7 people have sent to me that I've been using for testing purposes. The path is not in the right order at all, contre is going to have to set that up, so for now I am not going to share the link with you. It could misinform and such, especially if somebody doesn't understand the context and just sees the map.

Coordinates have been collected from the following people so far: contre, me, Valka, BirdJaguar, peter grimes, Plotinus, JoanK, and dutchfire. Anyone not on this list who wants to pass them on - please send them to contre from now on. Thanks to the magnificent 7 for your support ;)

Followtheyeti.com is taken, unfortunately, it's been registered (but not used).. so we need something else. I have a placeholder url, but a unique url would be cool, and they are cheap.. and like I said previously, I don't mind paying for it for a year or two or whatever. We could go with followtheyeti.org, I think that is available, but a .com would be cooler. Oh and if someone shares a good idea, please don't all start searching for it using godaddy.com or other sites like that! If enough people search the same domain, this will pop up on a douchebag's radar, and the domain could be snagged. There is a whole and crazy domain snagging world out there... so watch out for that please.

If anyone's wondering about privacy, nothing at all is sent back to google servers, but the coordinates on the map are technically available to anyone. So that's the only real security concern for now: whatever coordinates are displayed on that map will be available to anyone on the internet, if they can find their way to the url, and eventually search engine bots will index the site, so it will start showing up on search engines. So that's the only thing you've got to keep in mind in terms of privacy. It doesn't seem like a big deal to me, I think you guys all get that if you use a secret location where you've buried gold, that anyone will be able to right-click, "view source", and look at the exact coordinates where your loot is buried... but privacy came up earlier, so I thought I'd talk a bit about it.
