The Kiwi Concept?

Yeah, sounds neat, the concept. Birds of a feather flock together. Kinda shows life is more chill over there, on the far side.

Alot of Americans here comment on work life balance being better.

Americans more scared and high strung generally.

I wasn't born in NZ, but I've lived more years in NZ than my "home country", enough that I've lost a lot of my ability to speak my first language. If anything English could be considered my native language. So I definitely feel like a Kiwi by my own standards.

There is a definite imbalance between different sorts of Kiwis, however. Some of this is definitely irrational and political (for example, the National Party declaring Māori names for our gov't departments need to get gone), some of it might not be, I'm not sure. We have had our bad moments, the school curriculum was recently changed to include those and bring more awareness of those. For example, the 1981 Springbok tour and the New Zealand Wars.

I'll never understand why foreigners call kiwifruit 'kiwis', though, it's very strange.

Edit: Not to mention the dawn raids on the Polynesian Panthers.

Over here it's reasonably common to self identify as a kiwi. It's an informal term basically meaning New Zealander. Race doesn't matter.

Immigrants can become kiwis to me it's independent of citizenship ship though. Basically you can become a kiwi IMHO before your citizenship papers come through. If you get your citizenship papers and immediately sod off to Australia you're not really a kiwi IMHO.
Who would win in a fight between a kiwi and a kangaroo?

Korea iirc?

Dawn raids were almost 50 years ago. Governments apologized and it was deporting illegal immigrants/overstayed.

Gah. You should see what greets me on FB when I check the premier's page. The levels of paranoia and stupidity in her followers is mindcroggling.

Some of them are obsessed with the notion that "15-minute cities" means you're not allowed to travel more than 15 minutes from your home, and you're going to be constantly tracked and fined if you step one inch beyond that 15-minute mark.

It whooshes over their heads that if they own a cellphone, they're already being constantly tracked. They're obsessed that Justin Trudeau is going to take away their cars and trucks and guns and Rachel Notley (former premier, now the Leader of the Opposition) is going to go door to door and forcibly inject everyone with covid vaccine.

I'll never understand why foreigners call kiwifruit 'kiwis', though, it's very strange.

For the same reason I call saskatoon berries 'saskatoons'. It's shorter, and everyone knows what you mean (here, at least; I never use the word "kiwi" to refer to people in or from New Zealand). For me, a kiwi is a delicious green fruit with a fuzzy brown exterior. When we first tried them, I remember saying to my grandmother that they looked like little fuzzy potatoes.

Speaking of kiwifruit:

They're almost too cute to eat, but they do look delicious!

As a kid we called kiwi either kiwi fruit or Chinese gooseberry.

Love how this was just ignored lmao

Discrimination in kiwiland? A place built upon white supremacy?

Huh????

Wasn't official government policy.

I haven't read the book but Pukekohe is a town vs a province (your state).

Never claimed racism doesn't exist here and yeah if you dig you xan find things like this.

Alot if them also date from around USA had things like lynching, Australia massacred Aborigines into the 1920's etc.

The government also apologized and has been paying out compensation.

So once again nuance goes out the window with you. The difference is roughly similar to how NZ treats trans vs USA.

The Colonial history isn't great but it's relative and also how the government is dealing with things now.

Up north things can also be a bit crap more ways than one.

Cool whataboutism bro

Anyway let's listen to what non-white Kiwi's say instead of the white dude with a vested interested in downplaying the less savory elements of his countries history

I'll rephrase if you're black or trans would you rather be born here or USA?

I'm not downplaying anything our Colonial years weren't great but even our worst areas were not as bad as large swaths of the USA.

That debate about paying compensation for slavery in USA? We started paying 1990s.

Women voting 1920? 1893 here.

Trans prescription for drugs. $3.

State might pay for transition.

Legal protection for trans.

Police do not carry weapons

Either 1st or 2nd for least corrupt country

Minimum wage $15 an hour approx

Universal Healthcare

Universal welfare

20 holiday days a year

10 or 11 Stat day holidays a year

10 days sick leave a year

So if you had the choice where would you rather be born?

Have you even been to New Zeland?

Your opinion matters why?

Nothing is good until it's perfect?

What are you trying to accomplish?

And?

That doesn't stop it being segregation, buddy. That doesn't stop it being wrong. That doesn't change the fact it existed!

Have you even been to New Zeland?
Have you? You're quick to complain about posters picking on you every time you post, what're you doing here?

Let's all gang up on Cloud, as usual, lmao.

I'm not familiar with the book. Who wrote it, it's original slant or bias or how accurate it is.

Clouds Essentially crapping in my thread. I specifically said we're not perfect.

Bit no where is. We're the most liberal in the anglosphere countries and generally the top ten most liberal countries on the planet.

Some places may be better eg Scandinavia buy they gave their dirty little secrets as well.

NZ doesn't tend to elect hard right reactionary governments. I won't mention Covid responses.

UK and USA are competing with each other to see which one hits a critical mass of stupidity.

No place is perfect. What matters is progress not the past. Am I supposed to berate my mother every time she does me a favor because of the mistakes she made when I was two?

I was reading about NZ.

I didn't say anything til like the 17th whiny post, it gets old.

Cloud brings it upon theirself. Some sort of repetition compulsion.

I'd like to check it out someday when kids are older. SE Asia and Australia too, probably hit all in one go as it's too time consuming and expensive to take all those trips separately

Moderator Action: Less discussing posters and more discussing posts. Thank you.

Yeah long way to go, expensive, and takes more time than people think.

I have doubts you can really disconnect the white English speaker from the NZ identity completely. If the country had 50 million Chinese and Indian migrants tomorrow, would it still be NZ? So to say it's non-racial, it might be to a point. Certainly easier to assimilate into those countries than it is to go to China and start claiming I'm Chinese.
