The "OMG! Look what happened!" Thread

My god, what have I done...

My point is this: the continuity between France and the Gaul is exaggerated, mainly by Romanticist French folklore and superficial geographical similarities. RFC France spawns with the establishment of the Carolingian Empire so its clearly related to the Franks, which were not Gauls, but rather ended up their as one of the invading Germanic peoples that entered Roman territory in the 4th century.

This is why you should not play Americans on Marathon speed:

And my point is: they are not the same civ but they occupy the same territory so I would like to see the same mechanics as Rome->Italy.

I would like to see the French Franks and the Spanish Visogoths start off in Germany somewhere with nice big stacks, then forced by their settler and war maps to plough westwards to France and Spain and conquer any Romans/Celts living there. This would be nice and historical, could be more realistic than just flipping Roman cities, and could give the Celts a chance to hold out against both Rome and the Franks and establish their own France/Spain.

Say, that's a good idea! If the barbarians hadn't conquered Rome, then they would never have settled down into the germans, and the spanish and french never would have appeared. This could give Rome a chance to be the sole european power (a small chance, but a chance). My opinion is, if rome does not fall apart by the barbarian invasion, then france, germany and spain can only spawn if 1. They are empty, or 2. Rome is unstable and they have a revolution. Of course, I'm sure this idea is impossible, since if you played as any of those european powers and Rome just happened to live, I have no clue what would happen. But it's a good idea, right?

It's gonna be a very weird game though, post what happens.

Over 1000 turns left to the AI, who knows what will happen?

Heh... Okay, I'll do a few of these to see what happens.

Edit: wow, ten minutes later and 500 more auto-play turns to go. This is going to take a long time...

(takes a shower, comes back)

Auto-play turns remaining: 170...

Okay, after nearly an hour of waiting, I open up WB. Things seem more or less historical, if a bit anachronistic. New Amsterdam is still under Dutch control, Louisiana is still Spanish, the Portugese have Brazil, Canada is under join British/French control, South Africa is British, and a lot of old cities are still around (or got refounded): Carthage, Hippo, Susa, and Parsa are intact and under barbarian/Independent control, Sur and Hattusa (now Sidon and Kayseri) are Ottoman, good old Babylon is alive and well in Arab hands. The Third Reich, appearing well ahead of schedule, have conquered or vassalized Italy, Greece, France, the Vikings, and Mexico, and muscled into Russia, as if going for a historical victory plus Zimmerman Telegram; they are #1 in score by a wide margin. Here are the un-historical bits: the Dutch have colonized areas that should have gone to the English; namely, India and Australia (though not Delhi, which is Independent). Paris is the holy city of Christianity. The Chinese seem to have conquered Mongolia instead of vice versa; the Mongols have lost their capital and are now China's vassal. Portugal is a vassal of Spain. Ethiopia seems to have succumbed to native Impis, but the Mali are still not only alive but sovereign. The Egyptians, Vikings, and Inca are still alive. Most bizarrely, Egypt is labeled as the "Tributary Haixi State", despite not being anybody's vassal as far as I can tell.

Interesting city-placement by the A.I here on a 3000B.C Mali game, nice to see Damascus occasionaly. Most curious about Spasinou Charax, which was Persian up until a few turns ago, which civ did that name come from?

No, Shush spawns one tile northeast of that.

Anyway, USA on a 3000BC Marathon start, round 2: Monty has capped to the Netherlands and the Incas have capped to Arabia (WTH lol). Rome and Mongolia are the vassals of communist France (WTH lol), the Vikings have capped to Ethiopia (WTH lol), and Germany is the master of Portugal and Japan (WTH lol). The UK, in addition to being the master of Mali, has converted to Islam. Khmer is China's , but I expected that. India is alive and nobody's vassal; nobody is Spain's vassal. Buddhism has spread like the plague to places like Trondheim and Tenochtitlan. Here's the punch line: NOBODY EVER BUILT BYZANTIUM, so the Ottoman capital is still Sogut. The Mongols still control Karakorum, but it's not their capital. Other major cities are missing or in weird places but I can't go into further detail because this stupid game just encountered an unexpected error and had to shut down. F*** you, Microsoft!

also tried running a marathon America3000bc ... Spain was controling all of the middle east and shared russia with Germany, France had Italy and Greece, while Mongolia and Khmer had split up China (with Mongolia having thier palace in Beijing) Turkey was a disapora state controling Iran-Parkistan area, and Arabia owned most of north-central africa and India (Ethiopia owned a small strip down the east african coast and everything to the south of Congo Bassin)

Americas looked fairly historically acurate, except for Aztecs vassaling to Portugal and no French in Mississippi

Something funny has happened with the religious distribution in my currecnt game:

The year is 1390.

China: Confucian
Spain: no religion (atheist thocracy)
Russia: Jewish
France: no religion
Arabia: Jewish
India: Hindu
Carthage: Jewish
Holy Roman Empire: Christian (but was Muslim until a couple of turns ago)
Vikings: Jewish
Dutch: Jewish
English: Muslim
Turks: Jewish
Mongols: Jewish

Judaism is at 21%, with the next closes religion being Buddhism at 11%.

So how did this come about? Well, actually it was relatively straight-forward.

I started a game as the Greeks, with the intention of expanding into Eastern Europe, building lots of early wonders in the Russian flip zone, and then switching to Russian when they spawned. (Which more or less worked as planned, except the only wonders I managed to build for the Russians were the Great Wall in the Ukraine and the Moai Statues in Byzantium, plus a Great Prophet).

But in the process, I also conquered a big chunk of the Middle East (including Jerusalem), and had the idea of screwing over Saladin by building lots of really badly-placed cities in Arabia (i.e. one tile away from the coast and as close together as possible). I also spread Judaism to them, with the result that Saladin adopted Judaism the turn after he spawned and set about spreading it as best he could. It had also spread to all the other classical-era European and African states.

When the Russians spawned, I gifted them all my money (plus a 14 gold-per-turn allowance) and a open borders treaty just before switching civ. (For some reason, they didn't want any of my technologies or cities, even the ones in their flip zone). Helpfully, the Greeks then declared war on my a couple of turns after I switched, thereby making it easy for me to capture Stalingrad and Kazan (which I had built without realizing they weren't in the Russian flip zone).

While I was never intending to play a religious game, I ended up playing that way once I saw how things were going. I've just managed to convert the Mongols, have spread my religion to one of Asoka's cities, and have a squad of missionaries heading east to India and China.

Lake Michigan is the birthplace of American civilization. Literally.

BTW, Do any of you guys know how many nukes it will take to turn the world into a desert, or at least be able to see the results? I launched 10 - 15 later in this game, and there was absolutely no result. (The first time I nuked in RFC)
