I absolutely think that parental spanking can be appropriate. Yeah, some people will screw it up, but the basic idea works just fine.
Some times it works, sometimes it doesn't. It depends on the personality of the spanker and the person being spanked, and how it's done. I don't see how spanking, or corporal punishment in general, is inherently abusive, so I voted no.
It's not a strawman if someone on the other side actually said it. And someone in the other spanking thread DID say it was sexual abuse. Using that as a poll option is no more erecting a strawman than calling Goebbels a Nazi is an ad hominem.

Why would you spank a child if you weren't angry at them? Because you derive sexual pleasure from it? In that case, I'd vote for option 2.

It depends of the spanking...
With hand few times if child has really done something obviously wrong is another issue than with leather belt just to make child feel who's ordering in the house.
Also it depends of the children's age. I think if child is older, there should be certain amount of respect towards maturing body and the privacy of the child in that regard because it's really humilating for child who's learning to be self-sustaining getting manhandled by an adult. Some people miss this one.
I have seen cases where it obviously has been pure abuse, so I would lean towards not to use or use it very sparingly. I think there are many other tools that work as well than spanking. So why exactly it should be used?
I couldn't hit my own children if I got one since I know people who have been spanked or even slapped around (knowing it hasn't made any good for them but pretty much the opposite) and I believe that person's body should be always respected.

How is spanking sexual abuse? If I recall, spanking was turned into something sexual by weirdos that didn't get spanked as a kid.
