Ok thank you

How many megabytes fits on the standard 4.7 GB DVD? Id do the math myself but I always get thrown off by the 1000/1024 thing

roughly 4700mb — however much space your computer tells you is on the disc.

These units should all be the same, there shouldn't be a 1000/1024 extraneous conversion factor here like there is with an 8GB iPod, for example. The space on the disc is the space on the disc, in this case.

I'm trying to squeeze a file onto a DVD-R and its not working well

I'd split it but then Id waste 4/5 of a disk

If I recall correctly, storage media (like hard drives, flash drives, and DVDs) use giga = 1000 while file sizes use giga = 1024.

That would make a 4.7 GB DVD only able to handle up to a 4.58984375 GB file.

Can someone briefly outline which of Sigmund Freud's ideas were discredited and which still influence modern psychology?

Discredited: most of his Oedipus complex kinda of stuff

Influenced: "It is hard to deny the importance of an infantile, dynamic, crafty, Freudian unconscious, in part because the psychoanalytic narrative is so seductive and explains so much." - T.D. Wilson

Well, that's a pretty difficult thing to do, since Freud's work was mostly speculative rather than empirical, so not a lot of it can be actively disproven.

The thing that puts me off psychoanalysis is that you can spend decades in therapy and come out pretty much uncured. But very much poorer - while the analyst is richer (but looking very bored).

At least with CBT they give you 2 weeks, and it either works or it doesn't.

Some paperback books have been stored improperly and now the covers are curled up. How do I flatten them out? Also, how do I get rid of the mildew smell? There's no mold -- I checked -- but it smells bad.

(I REALLY WISH MY MOTHER WOULD STORE THEM PROPERLY. I'D DO IT MYSELF IF I COULD GET DOWN THE BASEMENT STAIRS. THEY ARE TOO DAMN STEEP.)

You could try a flat iron with minimum steam. It's a tricky business though. I'd just put them properly back in the bookcase and leave them. Or pile them up flat. With time they should straighten themselves. There's a surprising amount of water stored in paper. If you keep them somewhere warmish, the smell should slowly go.

I keep seeing ads on tv for this "world war z" movie. What the hell kind of movie is it cuz the trailers for it always leave me utterly confused as to what it's about?

It at least started as a movie following the overall plot of the book World War Z, a fictional work that "purports" to be an oral history of a zombie apocalypse and how human society eventually managed to overcome it. By now it's become a Brad Pitt disaster movie vehicle.

Cheap money grab that doesn't even follow the book beyond the overarching theme (hurr zombies)

The book itself was actually one of the best, most interesting takes on zombies in recent years.
