I am looking to procure a GoPro or something similar for my Norway trip - to help document some of my outdoorsy activities (hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, etc.) My camera is capable of 1080dp video, but it really drains the batteries, so I would prefer to stick to my camera for photo purposes only.
I have found this alternative to GoPro which is less than 50% of its price. COSTCO stocks two different versions:
Version 1
Version 2
They seem to be identical, with these differences: Version 1 allows you to shoot 60 frames a second - essentially I think allowing you to shoot "in slo mo". It also allows microSD cards up to 32GB, but has no wifi capabilities.
Version 2 is $50 cheaper, comes with wifi, but doesn't allow you to shoot at 60 frames a second - but limits you to a max of 30. It also only allows microSD cards up to 16GB.
As far as I can tell these are the only differences. I am not really sure what I would use more - the wifi capabilities or the slo-mo shooting mode? I think wifi would be more handy (for integration with my phone), but I haven't really though it through. The microSD size limitation on the wifi model doesn't bother me too much, but it does a bit.
This is the company that makes the product. There aren't many reviews for these 2 products online that I could find.. I found a couple and it seems that people say it is a good product that works well... or that it's a problematic product that is not easy to configure and set up - I assume that the 2nd group of reviewers are mostly "greenhorns/idiots" who don't know much about technology and expected this to be an exact gopro replica, for people without brains. But that's just a guess on my part.
Does anyone have experience with a GoPro or this alternative product? I just want to strap it on to my bike, head/helmet, or kayak, and record my trip from unique points of view. I don't care too much about selfies. Waterproofness is important. I've looked at various GoPro incarnations, and the Hero 3+ Silver looks great.. but is like $370. This alternative product is a lot cheaper. I can get a hero3 white for $250 or so, but the picture quality seems to be a lot worse than the silver. What do you guys think? Any tips or suggestions?
