Was anyone else taught growing up that men are supposed to remove their hats when entering a building?

I was taught that everyone should remove their hats when indoors, not just men. And when I joined the Army that was reinforced even more since, as Tim already stated, it is mandatory in the military.

What are the origins of this? It seems like a custom that very few people still observe. Though I have to admit I feel like a rube if I don't remove my hat when entering a building.

I think it's biblical and hence comes from many of those puritan rooted traditions.

“A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God” (1 Corinthians 11:7)

I don't think non judeo christan cultures observe this as much. But I could be wrong.

Do we not have a thread on the russian nerve agent attack in the uk on the spy who helped write the Trump - russia dossier?

The "remove your hat indoors" thing has had various reasons throughout history. Nowadays it's often for security reasons. If I walk into the public library and am not just passing through, I'm expected to remove whatever hat I might be wearing and/or take down any hoods.

Is taking your hat off for males not coming from the medieval tradition that a knight took off his helmet when entering a building as sign of non-hostility ?

BTW female do not take their hat off when entering a building (females are typical not a knight with a helmet)

Had a power outage last night. When the power came back on, for some reason I had to adjust my radio tuning thingy because it was all static (it's one of the analog ones). How would the power going out affect that in the first place? It can't have physically moved the dials.

Couple possibilities, since the dial is actually a variable capacitor in a tank circuit composed of fixed coils and fixed plus the variable capacitor.

The coils can be affected by temperature. If you adjusted when the power came on and then slowly had to adjust back as they warmed up that's likely.

The fixed capacitors discharged while the power was off, and they can leak. They almost certainly leak, but they might leak pretty badly. My monitor has bad caps in the power supply, and it can take a few minutes after turning it on before they are willing to cooperate and actually light the screen. Those are power capacitors that are basically either doing the job or they aren't. Your tuning capacitors are a lot more sensitive and their new normal may not be quite the same as the old normal, so you have to adjust to compensate.

Why do people bother about stuff, which does not affect them (or anyone else)?
Today I saw a few teenagers in the pedestrian precinct campaigning against transsexuals (until the police came; was not something official).
And I always wonder why.
It does not affect you, your health, your monetary situation, your success, your family, your friends, your community, your nation (unless the rate goes so high that birth rate becomes a problem, but let's not be silly).... so why bother?
(this is not the only topic where this question can be applied to, but it's the one where I found myself asking that question again)

EDIT: If you want to be on a moral high horse, then pick adultery, that at least affects someone negatively.
