actual nutritionists utterly hate popscience nutrition tips. being friends with many, I can confirm it ticks them off extremely hard. one fundamental thing every nutritionist will tell you:

there is no healthy or unhealthy food. a food can be poisonous, it can be full of vitamins, but it cannot be inherently healthy or unhealthy. there are only healthy and unhealthy diets.

regularly eating lots of fat does make you fat. fat is very calory dense, more so than any other food. however fat, especially in the US, has been targeted by smearing campaigns, while big sugar has perhaps the single biggest food lobby behind it.

it is perhaps true that putting sugar in just about everything is the number 1 contributing factor to global obesity. it's certainly not the only one. lack of exercise, processed foods, increased sodium and trans fats.

tl;dr: never, ever believe women's magazines or business insider when it comes to nutritional science. read papers or just ignore the discourse. because you will definitely be fine either way. eating healthy is the easiest thing in the world. eat a good balance of vegetables, processed starches, fruit, meat and dairy. voila, you now have a healthy diet. there is no need to overcomplicate it.

there is not a single scientific field which has been bastardized as much in popular culture as nutritional science.

there is no single scientific field which has had so much misinformation spread (against the scientific consensus) as nutrition has.

It is not about the food itself, but more about the eating pattern, I see, it is a really nice way to put it. However someone so close to me told me the problem with our current sugar is that its highly process as oppose to palm sugar which is more healthier, I don't really understand about this subject, so what do you think about that statement?

that is sadly not really true. brown sugar, palm sugar, rock sugar and so on are different in taste and texture from white (refined) sugar.

brown sugar, rock sugar and palm sugar also have a higher mineral and micronutrient content. so they are more nutritionally viable for sure.

but actually brown sugar has more calories than white sugar, ever so slightly. all the sugars, and hfcs, and honey, have very similiar calory ratios.

they differ chemically in that they're all made of different ratios of fructose and glucose, while some other sugars also have maltose. those all work slightly differently and iirc have different effects on blood sugar levels.

your friend is still not "wrong" per se. palm sugar and brown sugar have more "good stuff" (I hate bastardizing it like this..), aka nutrients your body can actually use. it will still make you fat. refined sugar has most of the nutrients removed and is what is commonly called "empty calories" - makes you fat without giving you nutrients.

I really just get it now, so it is basically like the white refine rice and a brown/red rice, so the white rice pretty much also contain equal or even less calories than that of brown rice, however the brown rice is a much more nutritious version of it.

This is what I just learn today from you lol, I thought brown rice possessed less calories

that's so weird! I was going to make the white/brown rice analogy, too, but then I thought it wouldn't help much. guess I was wrong! great minds think alike :D

difference is however that brown rice will fill you up quicker, meaning you eat less calories (it has more fiber I think).

The downside of brown rice is it goes rancid more quickly, but hey, what a remarkable world we live in.

Well, the point is to actually eat the rice, but if we keep teaching kids that corn ears are merely unrefined sugar-frosted flakes then they won't be able to appreciate anything resembling an edible meal.

Brown sugar is just white sugar with molasses added back to varying degrees depending upon the desired darkness.

brown sugar is either unrefined or it is partially refined and then the molasses is re-added during production (what you said). sugar that has not been refined has residual molasses clinging to it.

Yar. Its amazing how far two generations marched on that front that the storage is almost beside the point.

It's still high in a lot of cases, but the kids cereals in the 80s had more sugar than they have in them now. The high fiber granola for pooping seems to beat them solidly (ha!) on that front(ha!) now.

I agree with your general point, but there are foods that are inherently unhealthy. Processed meat, with very high levels of nitrates are considered to have no safe level, as I beleive current orthodoxy is about trans fats.

For a large proportion of the population in the west high calorie is generally bad. While fat is very dense in calories per weight, what I think about is calories by satiety. I find high fat foods without carbohydrates fill me up with less calories than high carbohydrate foods. The ultimate of this was when I was served a bowl of lard for breakfast after ordering effectively blind from a serbo-croat menu. I did not eat much before I had quite had enough, and it kept me going all morning. I find this idea, combined with loads of vegetables does a reasonable job of controlling my weight.
