TIL that...

There are no time zones in China. The whole country is on Beijing time!

^^^ And that is a good thing.

TIL about an Obama policy Republicans like.
As part of Obama’s Advanced Manufacturing Initiative, the federal government is trying to build a network of Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (MIIs) using the German model. Although there were many federal applied research programs, none focused squarely on commercializing manufacturing technologies or scaling up new technology products for an entire industry. Each institute specializes on a specific emerging technology and is situated in a regional hub, collaborating with universities and firms that are already best positioned to exploit the technology. [...] Republicans have been supportive of MIIs and have agreed to fund them at Obama’s requested levels.

Can someone elaborate what is meant with the German model in the MII stub?
The description sounds a bit like the Fraunhofer societies here but tbh I am not 100% sure if they are really talking about them.

It could alternatively mean Siemens and Volkswagen tactics of bribing their way through foreign country market favorable deals :mischief:

So I just learned from my friend who studies medicine that testicles and uterus are kidneys

It probably is. The document doesn't give a clear citation, unfortunately.

Anyway, TIL that the 25th anniversary of the dissolution of the Soviet Union is just weeks away.

And I learned another reason to hate the Thai monarchy.

I hear broccoli's good for your colon.

:Broccoli:

I gotta stop watching "Adam Ruins Everything".

TIL: 90% of the human population has some form of the herpes virus and most don't even know they have it because the virus is so weak that most people with it never develop symptoms. So if you are sexually active, chances are you have the herps. And if you don't have it, you're the weird one.

pretty similar numbers for HPV.

Yeah, he busted out those numbers when he was talking about how unwarranted the hysteria and shaming we engage in over most STDs really is. In fact, he said something like the only STD the average person considers to be worse than herpes is HIV, despite how harmless herpes really is.
