A totem is an animal, plant, symbol, natural phenomenon or similar which is related to a tribe. Having this relation unifies the tribe. And unity is strength! Both the totem and the tribe is considered sacred. A totem pole is a form of totem.

Some say that totemism is the oldest form of religion.

Behind the totem is an impersonal force of great power. Which I think the clan-members can "tap" into.

In Civ 4 the totem pole gives The Native Americans skill in archery. I believe a historical bonus from totem poles could be almost anything.

The article states BTW a dark skin, not black.
In line with our DNA understanding where 8 factors determinate skin color.
Factors that were already there before out of Africa,

AFAIK, there are not many major post-African mutations in any population. The entire diversity of our genome existed in our African ancestors but different populations expressed different traits in different proportions as they spread out and encountered new environments where these traits were selected for. African populations tend therefore to be far more diverse genetically than any other population.

Is my understanding as well.
Perhaps there is somewhere on internet some nice overview of the amount of mutations over time of say some 300k-500k years.
The last 30k years perhaps extra interesting because of the culture/tech effects on our preferred mutations.
For example, from the top of my head, in some tribes, mutations on saliva composition, additional enzymes to digest carbs, were significant in the last 10,000 years.
Perhaps as practical remedy for the increased carbs from agriculture, possibly in order to protect our teeth from increased decay of more (and cooked) carbs.
