US Debt Ceiling

The debt ceiling is unconstitutional and contradicts too many other laws in the event of reaching it and acting as if it's a constraint. If I were the Biden administration I would just continue to issue checks as Congress demanded of me and ignore the debt ceiling that Congress demanded of me, since they are both demanding of me a contradiction and one option is a million laws and the constitution followed, by breaking one other law, and the other is the inverse.

us govt has a spending problem so bad that even an arbitrary limit to it is better than nothing

Nothing that more tax cuts and more deregulation wont fix (oh and more bailouts)
What are you going to cut anyways ? infrastructure ? Medicare ?

Biden has a constitutional and Presidential duty to pay the bills. Yes, he should just ignore the situation and see what McCarthy does. I'd enjoy seeing him try to sue.

They've already telegraphed the last several times that if it ever comes down to it, they're going to mint that trillion dollar coin and make it work.

Ah, fiat. Suck it, commodities.

I suspect this might end up happening - what a spectacle it would be if the Republicans in Congress sued the administration and the Supreme Court ordered it to stop making payments!

The first things the President should cut are the salaries of congress and the senate.

Wow, an entire 0.000008% of the federal budget, problem solved

Long journeys start with a single step.

The thing is they are all so rich they would not notice. If we could get them to actually face the consequences of what they are doing to other people, by say not being able to buy food or getting evicted, then the plan could have some promise.

A better plan I heard is that elected representatives shouldnt be allowed to get bribes... I mean... donations from lobbyists.

Yes, you are right. Accountability is a kryptonite to many of these folks.

It is shocking how much it is allowed. It is clearly because of who gets to make the rules. Can you say for sure you would vote yourself out of a load of money? I really hope I would, but most people are weak when it really matters.

Most people have the spine of an octopus when it comes to money, power or peer pressure.
You'd maybe get representatives that arent in it for their own money but to actually help the people that voted for them.
Imagine that.

Careful with cutting salaries for elected officials. Either they then have another incentive to accept lobbies' money, or you're just making it impossible for people not already rich to get into politics.

I am a fan of paying people a lot for important positions while having super strict standards for corruption, malfeasance, and any abuses of power.

Anyways five senate dems have apparently taken offense with Biden’s repeated acquiescence in negotiations to work requirements and have signed a statement telling him to 14th amendment it and don’t cave. It’s pretty much who you would expect; Sanders, Markey, Warren, and Tina Smith and Jeff Merkley, but many more signatures are expected throughout the day.

My thinking on this is the capitalists who actually control the Republican Party do not want a default and will order the Republicans in Congress not to let it happen. Therefore Biden holds all the cards and should have told the Republicans to go pound sand.

There is a distinction between exceeding the deficit limit, and defaulting on government bonds.

The republicans may be happy for the former to happen thinking they can blame the democrat POTUS.

I'd like to see Congressional delegations get paid their state's average annual wage of teachers, firefighters, police, and sanitation workers (all local positions).

It wont do anything, since Congress enrich themselves in other ways. Previously they would move to well paying private jobs and speaking fees etc after leaving government positions
Now since Trump openly profiting while in office it seems that the gates are truly open
