Warning over narcissistic pupils

Yeah people these days are really narcissistic. They're always worrying about themselves and not me.

Typical uninformative, "inspirational" but not aesthetically pleasing business-motivational crap (IMO).

Yeah, because nothing is as inspirational as being the greatest philosophy major with 3 jobs.

Typical.

Since when did someone need to be inspirational before they could assess someone else's inspirationalness?

A cynic like Fifty provides no insight into what inspiration is. Even though Fifty is likely smarter than 99% of people in the world what does he have besides that? Fifty serves his purpose for us in that a reminder that with knowledge, logic and wisdom, satisfaction doesn't and often doesn't follow.

Didn't say I was particularly inspirational (if narz could detect what I was doing earlier in this thread... I'd have thought you'd be able to!)

And I also have minors in economics and math :smug:

I aint no cynic, I'm just cynical towards things that are worthless, like business motivational speakers. Walk into any Barnes & Noble and there's a huge section on business motivation using all sorts of lame metaphors and motivational jargon... oh and they all rest crucially on premises like "I did x and became successful, therefore if you do x you'll be successful!" which is of course just moronic.

You want real wisdom or inspiration? Read Letters from a Stoic by Seneca... great aesthetic figures provide far more inspirational sustenance then some hackneyed business motivation seminar. Seneca does what Jobs tries to do in that speech but he does it way better.

Excellent interpersonal skills, a great group of friends, a fufilling career trajectory, and all manner of other wonderful things that help make me the wonderful ball of wonder that I am. I've also had quite a few interesting life experiences (for someone my age)!!!

Fifty serves his purpose for us in that a reminder that with knowledge, logic and wisdom, satisfaction doesn't and often doesn't follow.

I'm satisfied as hell! Its just that I get satisfaction from things on a much higher aesthetic plane than you and other people who derive inspiration from dime-a-dozen "pursue your dream!!! throw off the shackles of conformity and expectation lol!!!!!" motivational seminar crap.

I'm living my dream Fifty. You're mistaken in that because I find fault in the way you approach certain subjects, I am somehow subscribing to what you dismiss. Don't conflate the two.

Except, it appears, on the internet, when you seem to miscommunicate with people such as Mrt144 and Narz.

When I talk to annoying people (not on here, most people here are smart), I like to pretend I'm narcissistic just to wind them up. :crazyeye: Great fun.

Insecure people often crave approving/reassuring/encouraging words from adults. Teenagers are often insecure, so what is viewed by these adults as narcissism is probably just a manifestation of their insecurity.

Oh, anyone interested in success needs to read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Honestly, anyone interested in successful people, and how successful people became successful (it goes into the life of Bill Gates in a lot of detail, and mentions Steve Jobs in relation to Gates's life), needs to read that book. It's a real eye-opener.

I didn't think the Jobs speech was bad.

Didn't you think it was just the same motivational crap we've all heard a BILLION times though? I mean it may be true that one ought to go with their gut, take chances, try new things, etc... but we've all heard that message A BAJILLION TIMES.

My gal just read that. She really liked it and she told me the stuff about hockey and it's pretty crazy when you think about it.

You sound like my ex. A intellectual who believes in all her "higher aesthetic plane" crap. I hope for you that you don't turn out like her.

I don't think Fifty takes himself very seriously nor does his aesthetic plane rise above the point of putting us on.
