That should be a Bud Light ad.

You know, Pedro II of Brazil does look an awful lot like Leopold II of Belgium.

Particularly interesting for those with some knowledge of mathematics

Yeah. I think he overstates his case. The condition of agriculture is nowhere near the state it was in in the interwar years, I believe.

He also contradicts himself. On the one hand everyone is abandoning the countryside, on the other everyone's returning to it.

Still, maybe I didn't pay enough attention.

Are the modern "barbarians" economic migrants, then?

this is the guy that predicted the 2008 crisis 11 years before it happened:

in 1997, in The Chaos Makers, he warned:

“By 2007 Britain and most of the other industrially advanced economies will be in the throes of frenzied activity in the land market…Land prices will be near their 18-year peak… on the verge of the collapse that will presage the global depression of 2010.

The two events will not be coincidental: the peak in land prices not merely signalling the looming recession, but being the primary cause of it.”

Oh right? That's an interesting, and quite accurate, prediction. Perhaps I should look into this guy more carefully.

I suppose it's possible we take current civilization for granted too much, and that at some stage we're going to experience another Dark Ages.

And that progress won't simply continue to happen as it has for the last ~400 years, since the Renaissance.

On the other hand, some authorities maintain that the Dark Ages were something of a myth in any case.
