I want to point out that Shabana Mahmood invoking her identity as a woman of color to silence criticism of this policy is actually so heinous that it nauseated me. A useful demonstration of where the "politics of representation" end up if not allied with a more systematic critique of society.
Also repulsive is the framing of this policy as compassionate, that it is somehow a stand against the racist right and not a total capitulation. Definitely mirrors the Orwellian framing we're seeing from the Trump administration.
Another parallel is that Mahmood seems to have abandoned all her previously held principles in the pursuit of power. She is a sort of brown female version of JD Vance in that regard I guess.
The future is looking very grim indeed for the people of the UK. First gratuitous cruelty against trans people, and now migrants and refugee are thrown to the wolves. Each step nerves the sociopathic nullities in charge for the next escalation of cruelty.
