Most overrated thing?

I don't understand. I really don't like sliced bread at all. Pre-slicing changes the taste of the bread radically (because, I guess, so much more of the bread's surface area is exposed to air), and, imo, for the worse.

Maybe the whole "greatest thing since sliced bread" thing started out as sarcasm, and was picked up by people who just didn't get it?

Well, maybe. But I can understand that sliced bread does fit in a toaster more quickly and usually more conveniently for most people (those nifty with bread knives excepted). So for those more interested in speed and efficiency than taste, sliced bread could be the way to go.

Also, slicing bread oneself makes crumbs (for everyone but the god-like). Which can be both a good and bad thing all at once.

Again: sliced bread means pre-sliced bread?

Because as opposed to Star Wars and the Beatles, pre-slice bread is objectively bad

This is a good sound point. Because what's the real alternative to sliced bread? Just pulling messily at the loaf? I mean, that's certainly possible to do, but I can't remember the last time I did just that.

Oh, and then there's croutons. But you have to slice the bread before cutting it the other way to make cubes, don't you?

See youtube on page one. All over it for you Sir B!

Soup or stew. Pulling off chunks is the far more convenient approach to sopping up tasty liquids.

Star Wars as an option in the poll

Civilization (the real thing, not the computer game franchise to which we owe the existence of this site).

I'm divided: I think the 60s version of the Jonas Brothers is really overrated, but I also think George Lucas' frothy discharge is also overrated. Why isn't the poll multiple choice?

Sliced bread, on the other hand, is totes amazeballs.

The ancient Greeks and Romans, too. To hear a lot of people talk, you'd think they invented breathing, language, culture, puppies, sunny days, and all of "Western civilization" alone. It's like nobody else in the world existed at the time save some dumb, hide-covered barbarians who came in to break things for fun.

North American bread is much different from European bread though. I suppose I'm not sure what kind of bread you eat, but here when someone says "Hey, I bought some bread!", you can expect a white substance that is fluffy like cake and can be crushed down to the size of a marble without much effort. It doesn't really taste like much - it's used as filler. The best thing you can do is toast it - the shape of a slice will be exactly what you'd expect "toast" to look like, at least in terms of American pop culture.

I've never tried to slice this bread myself, but it's so fluffy (like a sponge almost) that it's probably a hassle. I don't think I've ever seen it unsliced. European style rye bread makes more sense to slice manually - the crunchy crust will make it much easier.
