And no socialist or communist better say anything over 50,000 or I will call them out on it.

It depends on the level of social services in the country. So if housing, health care, education etc are subsidized then one wouldn't need as high a salary.

The 75k+ range is a good place to be if you're an American living in the Midwest. That's enough to afford all the basics and have some left over for saving/investing. Several of my friends are in this salary range. They make enough to own a home and car and to go out on the weekends if they want to. A good many of them make yearly donations and volunteer. All that is needed is a Bachelor's degree and willingness to work 9-5, Monday-Friday. For software engineers, the best stuff to make (for making money) is enterprise software for business.

50,000 would spoil me in my present state, lacking as I am in dependants, but I can't really conceive of myself needing more than that, especially assuming I end up with a partner making a similar wage.

The only reason to insist on making more money than $50,000 is to buy things to prove your supposed "superiority"over the common man. No one needs to drive around in a BMW or a Porche. That's sickening considering you could be using that money for charity.

I drive around in a Toyota, that's all I need.
Disgustipated, my friend, we shall make a red out of you yet. ;)

Have you ever driven a BMW or Porche? They are amazingly fun. You can drive a Toyota if you want, but saying that they're "as good as" a BMW or Porche is just plain wrong.

Oh, and BMWs are very different to Porches.
And I'm sure crapping on a diamond or gold toilet is different than crapping on a porcelain one, and that both are different to each other. Doesn't make either of them anything less than an obscene extravagance. :p

50k doing something I like.
100k doing something I don't like.

once "stole" one from a friends father. pretty fun yeah.
i guess having my own space ship would be pretty fun too, but you know what?

there's only so much ressources. nobody should own something not everyone can have.

$40,000-50,000 seems about right. I put on legendary snooker parties only once a decade; Janet Reno commands a lot of money for appearing.

I'd be happy with the US national budget.

some greedy people here.

$50,000 is all I need. Why do you guys really need more? What the hell are you going to do with that much money?
What the hell are you going to do with your life?

I'm serious actually. Have you considered what you are living for? What you want/should do, or what your "purpose" is?

It's probably less than I'm actually going to end up making in a few years, which puts me in a good spot in the long run I guess - I intend to save a lot while I'm young of course.

I perhaps would have voted higher (100k in the poll) assuming a family/children but that's definitely not the case right now and probably won't be for a while either so no real reason to go with that.

It all depends on the size of my hypothetical family. Since my kids' existences are dependent on Chuck Norris allowing them to exist, I voted for the last one.

$100,000 would allow me to live comfortably at the moment. Considering my future, however, I'd want to be able to retire early and live off the interest of my investments or at least be able to hold a job that I could work at my leisure knowing full well I am already sustained for the future.

I don't think I could assign a dollar value to that.

Depends on whether or not I'm single, where I live, and so on.

If I'm living in the DC area with a couple of kids, then well over $100,000. (Try getting a decent house within an hour's drive of the city for under $400,000 or so, even now, and it could be difficult) If I'm unmarried, young, and living a bit farther away, like I am now, then $50,000 would be more than enough for me. (Although I'd certainly take more if I could without substantially impacting my quality of life) It's pretty context dependent.

Enough is never enough.

BTW. On the subject of BMWs and Porsches, Perfs goal is to buy a used German roadster by the end of 2011.

Of course, if Perf made more money, Perf could have a new German roadster.
