The women and girls are killed because they failed to obey some man - father, brother, uncle, husband, or because they were deemed to have failed in some other way - or were simply considered worthless.

Honor has nothing to do with it. That's just the excuse the men use and their society lets them get away with it.

I think the reason honor killings normally happen is because of a sexual indiscretion. I don't think it's because they failed or were considered worthless.

Reputation and honor are really important to some families. In Kurdistan it's considered shameful for a woman to go to the bazar alone. She can go with another woman but not alone. A lot families personally don't care, like if they lived in Europe they are more free there but in Kurdistan they worry if the neighbors or relatives see her there they will talk. I'm not saying its true for all families either but it is for a lot from what people have told me.

Anyway I'm not condoning honor killings but I'm saying it can come from that mentality but in extreme cases, I don't think most people agree with it.

The problem here is that there are many different motivations and combinations of motivations for this violence and murder, and a single name would fail to describe too many of them. Complex human behaviours have complex motivations.
