What to call a girl...

I just call them by their name, or their nickname. The only girl who gets special names by me is my girlfriend :)

btw, never call a girl "Fräulein" in switzerland if you want to keep talking to her, unless she's a 60yo spinster.

If you can remember her name then use it, but whatever you do, make sure its the right one or your dead. If in doubt, gorgeous usually does the job.

Good tactic. Come up with a pet name for your gal. That way, when you call her the wrong name, she will just think you came up with yet another cute nickname for her. :mischief:

Mrs Erectus: Why havent you called me by my name in eight years?

Bozo: Oh come on, Hon, whats in a name?

Mrs Erectus: Youve forgotten my name, havent you?

Bozo: Dont be ridiculous...

Mrs Erectus: Then what is it!! Say it!

Bozo: Look, Im not going to play this silly game, ok?

Mrs Erectus: Jane! Your wifes name is Jane, you maniac!

Bozo: Of course it is! You know I love you Jaime, relax, will ya?

Mrs Erectus: My god! Youre...youre (sputter) a complete idiot! (gets up and storms out of the room)

Bozo: Where are you going Hon? Are you going to make me something to eat?

Mrs Erectus: (door slam)

Her name is usually a good one, or "chuck"

Are you serious with "chuck"?

Using their name or nickname works good. Other than that, I prefer to go with things that arn't normally used, especilly if they are items of food, like these: Crunchy, Lollipop, Sunshine, Puddin' Pop, Candy Apple, Muffin, Strawberry, Crispy, Chcolate-chip, Popcorn, Butter Tart.

I also like to say (their name)-bear. Example: Amie-Bear. I actully call a girl in my math class that and she seems to like it.

Also, hun is usually a good bet.

I'm "not allowed" to call her by anything but her name...or serious consequences ensue ;)

Chick, girl, woman, wench, babe, or just nothing at all (i.e. a simple "Heyyy")

What would you use for a young babe in Switzerland?
Meitli or Meitschi (depending on the local dialect) can be used, though it's kinda dangerous. It's basically the equivalent of 'girl', so especially girls who are still unsecure about their adulthood might take offense. But especially in the area of Bern, Meitschi is quite a common endearing term for a girl.
In recent years foreign terms for this such as chica/chick, bella and babe have become more widespread as well.
But the safest way would still be to just stick to her name.

Of course the range widens once we're talking about your significant other, here a large range of endearing terms are available such as Schatz, Schätzli, Schnuggi, Müüsli. (most of them are unisex, though)

Fräulein used to be the correct form to adress a unmarried woman (literally it basically means little/small woman), but it's gone out of fashion, and today is only used by old guys or for old spinsters.

Memorising above for use for my year in switzerland.

Generally I call a girl a name to get a reaction out of her, they USUALLY know I'm playing games with them :p.

if not, I just use their name, I mean a name has a purpose does it not?

Crunchy  I don't think that would work, you would have better luck with "Hey you".
