What to call a girl...

Honey honey! O sugar sugar!

How about love? I like how the english (that naked cook guy at least) can call some random lady that, and get away with it.

Ever tried "ham and eggs"?
No but when I'm mad at her I call her Orange Roughy.

Another nice term of endearment saying "ciao Bella" or "dahlink" (german accent).

People actually say that in America? Or is it just said normally by the talian?

I say it all the time but I like being a little different in my "what's up's".

Of course. Thinking about it, I don't think I usually greet anyone with a "Hello" or "Alright?"- normally I would get straight to a point.

What to call a girl? Definitely not a 'call girl'.

Miss [name], (acquaintance, first introduction, single, proper)
Misses [name], (acquaintance, first introduction, married, proper)
Ma'am (acquaintance, first introduction, unknown marital status, same age or older then you, proper or casual)
Madame (to one who is superior to your position, or to show respect)
Lady [name], (a bit less proper, but still respectful)
First Name, (friend, casual)

Yes, but the advantage of calling a girl Miss or Ma'am incorrectly (or even correctly, for that matter) is that their reaction to it can tell you volumes about their personality - the example that immediately comes to mind is that if they say "It's Ms [prounounced mizz] I'm married" in a haughtly voice, you can immediately assume they have the personality of a cactus and stay well away.

Do you know her? If you know her, she'll let you know what's cool and isn't. I call my girlfriends everything from babe to dollface to the stuff Mathilda is keeping an eye out for. You might not get such an easy pass on the rougher ones, but "girl" and "babe" are pretty generic. "Dude" is usually fine, too, it's not really gender-specific in my mind.

If you don't know her, please stick to "miss" or "ma'am". "Lady" is okay sometimes too. Personally I can't stand getting "ma'am'd" (how do I arrange those apostrophes?) but it beats the other crap people come up with. I tend bar at night, and I don't mind nicknames from regulars, but I can't believe some of the things other people say. If you do not know me, do not call me sweetheart. Do not call me princess. Do not call me sugartits. Call me by my name, and if you don't know it, ask.

And for the record, addressing a group of ladies as "ladies" almost always sounds incredibly sleazy.

I understand this. Saying ma'am has the connotation that the woman if old. I would reserve ma'am for older women that I am trying to show respect to, definitely not the women I am trying to hit on.

Really? Whoops... :(

I sometimes take the piss calling my gf 'buttercup' etc generally i call her by her name or some form of abbreviated version.

Talking to my female mates is a lot different- i call em whatever then.

I call them a bunch of different things, close friends can be the following: dudette, girlio, actual name, pet version of name (Samantha-->Sami), homie g, fool child, awesome child, cool cat, seniorita (or LA seniorita depending on my mood), amiga, comrade, best friend, lass, and when I'm feeling brave...woman :p

Helps make the day go by faster and be a little less boring.

m'lady rocks. that way I can call you my lord.

failing that my names a winner, or a cutesy version of my name. One of my male friends refers to me affectionately as 'Kates'.

babe, sweetie, honey etc. are crap unless your close to them. mate and dude are unisex!

Sweetie, Darlin and just sometimes Moi Luvvah in a broad west country (piratical) accent.

Im vagly irritated that despite growing up in London i've never been able to make the cockney Luv work. It just sounds sexist and crap when I try.
