Say we had a big party and all the OT regulars, including the lurkers, were there. What would this party be like? Who would host it? If c_h hosted, do you think he'd stick around or leave immediately? Would we be allowed to curse? How long would it last before degenerating into a series of rabid arguments?

What kind of music would we party to? Who's the funny guy? Who's getting laid? What kind of beverages would we drink and would there be any illicit substances? Drinking games?

Discuss. [party]

I definitely would be the drugs guy at the party, as I usually am.

I'd be the strange-looking guy in the kitchen that no one wanted to talk to.

Either that or the guy who all the women flock around in an attempt to avoid the other strange-looking guy. I can't make up my mind.

Most people would be disappointed to see their mental images of each others' appearance shattered. That, and there would be hardly any women to talk to.

Nobody would show up. Okay, maybe one person would show up.

Remember how we tried to send a bunch of stuff around the world? We just can't do logistics. The party would be announced to start at 8pm, the first person would show up next tuesday at 5pm, and everybody else would forget about it.

I would assume it'd look like an academic/political conference, except less civilized :dunno:

I'm kind of envisioning that thing where they plunk down a keg in the lobby of a law school every Friday afternoon. Only the topics of conversation include things more interesting than constitutional law. In addition to constitutional law, that is.

So, to handle the bad at logistics angle...

Posit that one of us wins a lottery and decides to host this thing in some really cool place and springs an all expenses paid weekend there for those who attend the Friday night CFC social.

So, now that we are all there...yeah, it looks like some sort of business conference or self help seminar or something, only most everyone is probably drunk or otherwise enhanced. Everyone winds up disappointed when they find out that the people they think are so quick witted only appear that way because you can't see them thinking about what they are going to type.

You ever see an academic conference?
I think we could give them a run for inflated egos, self-righteousness, and barely disguised trolling.

I'll predict that there will be many heated arguments about race/gender issues breaking out, long winded soliloquies regarding various political and philosophical matters, some lighthearted banter, and many people off to the side standing awkwardly.

I reckon about an hour before serious arguments.

We'll discover our haplogroups for free while I and KG debate how to prevent Netherlands from sinking

What women? Unless you guys brought dates/wives, there might be about 3 of us, at most. Unless you count the semi-regulars and occasionals, and then the number might be somewhere around 8.

But if you were to invite a particular person who is no longer around, I predict that none of the rest of us would even be noticed anyway.

I wouldn't know about academic conferences. The closest I ever came to that was fan-run science fiction conventions, heavy emphasis on meeting authors, writing, editing, publishing, artwork... of course many panels were about Star Trek or whatever other work the author guests were known for, and some years there were whole streams of science programming. One year they got Phil Currie from the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology to come and do a whole stream of panels on dinosaurs, fossils, and other paleontology-related topics. And the year that comet crashed into Jupiter? That happened during the convention, and there was a telescope set up so anyone who wanted to have a look at Jupiter could do so.

One memorable panel, though, that might have appealed to people here was "Are These the Dark Ages"? There are so many ways to interpret that. This panel was held back in the '90s, and of course there were world events going on then that did make some things seem very dark.

But political conferences? Those are not in the least bit civil. At least not in my experience.

And here I was thinking this thread would be about a political party. :)

I'd be the guy in the corner drinking alone. I know I haven't been here much due to time constraints. And trying to avoid posting in forums.

I would be the guy who didn't come.
actually I like this response better.

.

Huh?

Well, alright then, I'll bring my own bunch of women.
