It's only ever in Northern Europe, during summer vacation. Poland has a summer house near the water on one of those northern Norwegian islands. I don't remember which one.
That is the joke, yes.I don't know how serious you are, but hexagons are really the last problem Civ5 has. Actually it's one of the few good decisions made there, even though I don't care that much either way.
The number of adjacent tiles has some relevance but it doesn't make or break your game design.

In some cultures St. Nick and Santa Claus are two distinct figures. It could be true in Poland too, I can't remember.. but we do have St. Nick visit us on December 9th and Santa Claus on the 24th, so I suppose they must be two separate individuals in Polish lore too.
