So 395 out of 7,105 languages are spoken by 95% of the world's population?

I've a feeling this is only going to get worse (assuming more languages is better).

And a significant number of those 7,000 languages are particular to Papua New Guinea?

Indeed, probably each year at least a few languages get extinct.

And a significant number of those 7,000 languages are particular to Papua New Guinea?

I suppose there are probably a few hundred languages spoken in Papua New Guinea.

That list is a little lacking, because there's at least ten thousand Glaswegian drunks who all speak their own utterly unique dialect of drivel.

That site does not look very legit, given that it doesn't even mention Germany in regards to turkish speakers (native or 2nd language) while mentioning semi-random countries as second language speakers.

Also, there is no nucleus of 2nd language turkish speakers in Cyprus, given there is no turkish minority there after the invasion, and the turkish-held part is not recognised by the UN. I am sure the site has other such problems with info.

I wouldn't think that means they pretend that turkish Cyprus doesn't exist.

The UN doesn't recognise the Republic of China, either. They're politicians, not geographers.

Yes they do -- it's the People's Republic of China. Oh, do you mean Taiwan, Province of China? Of course they do.

Well, the Wittlesbachs have already been overthrown once, so I imagine they'd be more sporting about than the Windsors will be.

In general the Scots are more sporting about things.

Cold War propaganda has succeeded in orientalizing Russia in Western eyes, meaning that it is frequently described as being outside of 'Europe'. If English usage gives in to the We-Poles-are-Westerners-like-you ideological attack on traditional usage, a funny consequence would be that 'Eastern Europe' could pretty much only contain Ukraine and Belarus, if those.

The debate is silly, but I find that thought amusing.

Yes. Polish is an interesting language. But with a population of 38 million, I'm not sure it's worthwhile me studying it. Unless I plan on setting up home in Poland of course.

Yeah, definitely do not learn Polish, unless you have plans to move there or already speak a Slavic language. It would take you years to learn, even longer to master, and.. you'd end up dedicating a lot of your life learning a language you'd never use, so it'd be sort of pointless unless you really like learning hard to learn languages or are pining for a Polish girl and want to impress her by reciting a Mickiewicz poem from beginning to end in perfect spoken Polish with your own interjections in between verses 10 years from now when she's already with another guy, 2 kids, and a dog.

So no, you probably don't want to learn it! Pronunciation is actually not that difficult. Once you can do all of our sounds and learn the alphabet, you can pronounce anything just by reading it. That part's easy. Everything else is far more challenging.

I spend a lot of time in Greenpoint, Brooklyn - so, so Polish! Knowing pronunciation would be helpful.

I used to think Polish and Russian sounded the same, I couldn't tell them apart. Then I worked with a Ukrainian, and she dispelled that crazy notion

Where I live I'm most likely to hear Polish, then Czech, then Ukrainian, then Russian, then many of the Balkan tongues.

But Greek more than any of those.

USA#1!

In the immortal words of Tekee, Polish is Russian spoken by ducks.

I have a pretty good ear for Russian. But Polish just sounds wrong to my ears. Slovak sounds like complete gibberish (this is the madviking goes to the party at the Slovak embassy story) to me. Ukrainians can understand Russians but not the other way around, I think.

Interesting.. My dad worked in New Jersey for one summer, in the construction industry I believe.. He said that every single person working with him was Slavic: Czechs, Russians, Poles, Serbs, etc.. But since there were a lot of Poles, everyone learned Polish and used that to communicate with, rather than using English. Not sure if that was just that particular summer or time period or that particular company, but according to him all he heard and used was Polish, except for after hours. Which amused me for some reason.

To a Polish ear Russian sounds like drunk Polish and Czech sounds very cutesy. As for ducks, that comment always cracks me up

About Polish language:
I would SO love to hear You guys read this sentence :

"W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie"

... oh god... ! That would be hilarious ! :crazyeye::lol: Even Poles have problems saying it right so don't worry :D ;) It means : In "Szczebrzeszyn" (it's a crazy :crazyeye: town name) beetle makes a sound in reed. I know it does not make sense but the sentence is just made up to be a tongue-breaker ;)

I realize that the Polish language is tough to master ... and probably not worth it anyway (it is probably only second to Hungarian in difficulty ;) - Nothing quite like it in the whole world.) And I just wanted to say - comparing Polish to Russian is like comparing two completely different continents ;)

Poland is trapped between hammer and anvil again. :(

When we kill cows without anesthetic, the Greens and the EU say we are barbarians:

When we kill cows with anesthetic, the Jews, the USA and Israel say we are anti-Semites:

Link to video.

Anti-Semitism strikes again!

Now Poland's Jews are defenceless against Polish anti-Semitism, unlike before 1945, when they could always hide in camps protected by Germans:

BTW:

I am personally against banning kosher slaughter.

Just like I am against other similar BS ideas spread by the Greens and some EU circles.

Poland has until recently been the main exporter of kosher meat to Israel, AFAIK - and Israel's money does not smell.

Business is business and the Greens and some EU circles with their silly ideas should not be allowed to interfere.

But claims that banning kosher slaughter was dictated by anti-Semitism... This is even more idiotic than the idea of banning it...

@Domen - Why do You care so much about the Jews ? It often strikes me as if You are overreacting ! Something is not right here ! (in polish : Dlaczego jesteś tak bardzo nadpobudliwy na punkcie żydów ? Często wydaje mi się , że przesadzasz, coś tu jest nie tak!)
