There is probably no such thing as "human races" (just one race - because all humans can interbreed with each other).

And certainly for example Poles, Jews, etc. are not "separate races", in genetic and biological terms.

Jews actually had historically lived in many different and distant parts of the world for centuries, and genetically Jews from one region have nothing to do with Jews from another region - they considerably differ in look, because they lived in different climates, intermarried with different locals, etc.

However, there is such thing like cultural background and upbringing / education, which is influencing people's lifes.

Jews for example are people who continue some very old cultural traditions, they are a well-organized and well-established community with their long traditions and inter-Jewish solidarity. They put emphasize on some things in life, like education, business, etc. This is why many Jews are so successful. They learned all of this during the Diaspora, as before the Roman conquest they were rather not very "enlightened" peoples, compared to many other Ancient civilizations.

Some of Orthodox Jews were and still are racist towards other peoples, treating "the goys" as inferior peoples, sent by God to serve the "chosen nation".

That is just propaganda there. Jews of pre-diaspora times were highly scientific, for example they had advanced medicine so much that they came to realise they had to perform surgical procedures on the genitals of the male infants so as to secure their better health.

:(

Highly advanced surgical procedures (such as craniotrypesis) were known even to many native tribes of both Americas, Kyriakos.

Jews started their history as Hebrew tribes, who lived during the same period as highly advanced Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations.

It would be really hard to call the Jews of that period as more enlightened than those civilizations.

they had to perform surgical procedures on the genitals of the male infants so as to secure their better health.

What? Circumcision is not securing any "better health". It is only used as treatment in some relatively rare dysfunctional conditions of genitals.

Otherwise, circumcision is nothing useful. BTW many African tribes practiced circumcision as well - both male and female circumcision.

Surgical procedures were known even to the Aztecs, Kyriakos.

Interesting that the irony was lost, but the example given is still in the same vein...

(Domen, my point was that many people even today claim that circumcision is good for the infant's health. I pointed that in such a case, the Roman-times Jews, and those before them, must have been really good at sciences such as medicine so as to know that...).

This is too OT though, sorry :)

Actually I edited "the Aztecs", for "many tribes of Americas".

The Aztecs appeared in history relatively late, while those surgical techniques were known in Mesoamerica already long before their arrival.

my point was that many people even today claim that circumcision is good for the infant's health.

Yeah, right... And Jewish ritual slaughter (kosher) is good for animals' health perhaps. ;)

As I wrote - circumcision can be useful to treat several rare conditions (mainly phimosis).

So what exactly is the source of stereotypes about "Polacks" and of "Polish jokes" ???

Polish jokes are basically just blonde jokes with the word blonde removed and a slur word for "Polish person" inserted instead. I've only heard a couple that were in any way clever or funny - a good example was an episode of South Park that made me laugh quite a bit by offending my Polish sensibilities.

They don't exist because we're idiots. Why do Jewish jokes exist? Because Jewish people are associated with money and high paying jobs. Jealousy. In short, we're so goddamn intelligent that people try to pick on us, much like people pick on the U.S. for being so strong militarily.

The only problem really is that the jokes aren't funny. Some of them are, and those that are I applaud.

If you take thousand tribal customs, I'm sure you'll find one of them having a positive effect requiring advanced scientific knowledge to discover. This does not mean that particular tribe possesses advanced scientific knowledge.

Take another Jewish custom, the kissing of the mezuzzah before walking through a doorway. That's an excellent idea if you want to share the bacteria of people who have entered shortly before you.

Why do Jewish jokes exist?

Actually Jewish humour associated with money and stereotypical Jewish "greediness" or business skills, was invented by Jews themselves.

On the other hand, racists jokes about Jews (or jokes about "Hans, Jews and death camp") were invented by other people. I do not think, that Polish jokes - which are more similar to those "Hans, Jews and death camp" jokes, than to "Jewish money jokes" - were invented by Poles themselves...

That's an excellent idea if you want to share the bacteria of people who have entered shortly before you.

But sharing bacteria and antibodies (antibodies are being shared while two people kiss) is actually good for improving immune system. :)

Except, of course, of instances when you share some very dangerous bacteria - but, you know, who does not risk, does not profit. ;)

Jewish humour related to money and to mocking Orthodox Jewish traditions, was invented by Jews themselves.

This kind of Jewish joke is called "szmonces" (plural: "szmoncesy") in Polish:

http://www.translatica.pl/slowniki/po-angielsku/szmonces/

"Szmoncesy" are jokes which were popular in Poland before 1939 among Jews themselves (below examples in Polish, by cabaret Derkacz):

Also characteristic Jewish accent of Polish language is perfectly imitated by cabaret Derkacz in this video:

Another "szmonces" (in Polish) - two Jews arguing for money, listing who lent money to whom, who needs to give back first, etc.:

Before the Holocaust, Jews were humorous people, who were capable of laughing at their own stereotypical vices and weaknesses.

Only the trauma of the tragedy of the Holocaust changed them, so that nowadays they consider every single Jewish joke as Anti-Semitic.

Effects of such a tragic mark on Jewish history are perhaps going to last for a very long time.

Yes. :)

Circumcision as a standard "medical" practice (or a solely religious one) in my view is a horrible practice which should slowly stop existing. The trauma to the infant alone must be quite devastating, since infants tend to react to even very minor pain in traumatic ways.

I recall how F.Kafka in his diary described his presence during a circumcision. Particularly the part of the rabbi who used his mouth in some way...

Miserable, po-faced bastards.

There are exceptions of course, Traitorfish.

But many Jews are so sad and humorless, that they only search for Anti-Semitism everywhere.

There is even a movie about this (made by a Jewish person, Yoav Shamir) - "Defamation" ("Hashmatsa").

When it comes to Polish jokes, some of them are funny, but most are simply not funny and offensive.

When it comes to funny ones - for example the advertisement of "Alchemy vodka" about Polish inventions (glass hammer, etc.) is funny.

It is also mocking the Polish drive for listing historical inventions by Polish people (who often worked and invented abroad, rather than in Poland), while modern Polish state is not really funding scientific research - in Poland perhaps the lowest percent of PKB out of all EU's states go for funding scientific research.

You can read about Lucjan Łągiewka, who is a genius inventor (surprisingly he is a self-taught inventor), but has no support from Polish budget.

Poland is not the best place for scientific research nowadays, which is why Polish scientists are often working and patenting abroad.

L. Łągiewka's inventions (have good chance to be wasted, and patented by some British guys first, because of lack of support from the Polish state):

First two links are in English:

Łągiewka's energy absorber (even professional physicians had problems with understanding how it works - which is why they initially rejected his invention in the 1990s, because the fact that it is working defies Newton's laws of motion, but after a closer look, it is very simple, and at the same time amazing):

Check the video, it shows how this amazing (and yet simple) energy absorber works, despite the fact that Newton's laws suggest it shouldn't work:

Yes. Polish is an interesting language. But with a population of 38 million, I'm not sure it's worthwhile me studying it. Unless I plan on setting up home in Poland of course.

Yes. Polish is a slavic language with links to the other slavic languages. Most notably Russian, I suppose, with a substantially bigger population to have a go at.

But, still. In order of number of speakers, English comes top. Then Spanish (I'm guessing). Followed by some variety of Chinese - who knows? - Mandarin or Cantonese or something.

Then blah de blah. I'd guess the Francophonie is pretty big. Then there's the Indian subcontinent.

A long way further down comes German. Or maybe Portuguese?

The point is Polish is pretty much nearer the bottom of the list.

It could be much more esoteric, though. Like Welsh. Or Icelandic. Or - heaven forfend - Scottish Gaelic.

Mandarin is actually more spoken than English I believe. English is either 2nd or 3rd if I remember correctly. Arabic is around 5th I believe

Ah yes. But then you're talking about mother tongues. In which case you'd be right, I guess.

But if you include second languages, English is well ahead. A long way. Since something like 300 million Chinese people, alone, speak it. And English is an official language of India.

Then Spanish (I'm guessing).

Correct guess - Spanish is just one position behind English among most spoken languages:

http://frankherles.wordpress.com/2009/06/28/the-100-most-spoken-languages-on-the-world/

Polish actually has around 50,1 million speakers according to this website above (including 43,6 million native speakers).

Polish is 29th among the world's 100 most spoken languages according to the link above.

=======================================

There is a total of 7,105 living languages in the world currently - many have just dozens or hundreds of speakers!:

Europe has the smallest number of languages of all continents - only 284 (even though it seems that entire Russia is included):
