Which films have you seen lately Vol.22 Now with Smell-O-Vision.

I saw "1992." I guess it replaces "Cocaine Bear" as Ray Liotta's last film - probably a better legacy for him haha. Anyway, the film takes place on the backdrop of the 1992 LA Riots and much of the scenes in the movie are of the riots themselves, but the plot is essentially that a group of bank robbers wants to use the chaos of the riots as cover to go pull an otherwise impractical heist. Meanwhile, an ex-convict who is trying to keep himself on the up and up and protect his son converges with the bandits. Basically, it's part heist, part action hero, part historical drama (well the riots, I don't think the robbery is anything but fiction). It was 90 minutes and I was entertained although the ending was a little bit fanciful in terms of how quickly sides switched and I'll leave it at that.

Lupita Nyongo'o should be a star. I don't know why she isn't a star already. Maybe she just hasn't found her breakout role?
I think the only film I've seen her was in The Force Awakens so far.

And that was only as a CGI character.

But (Wiki sez) she was also in Twelve Years a Slave (which I haven't seen), and both the Marvel Black Panther movies (which I have).

Jack Reacher. I was thinking about the series with Ritchson and remembered they made a movie with Cruise. Never thought Cruise would make a good Reacher, even without having read the books. Checked out Netflix and realized they made two movies, so I rewatched the first one. It holds up, despite Cruise's lack of believability in the role. Definitely more of a spy thriller I enjoy, compared to Bourne, probably because the spy part of the equation is less navel-gazey CIA mumbo-jumbo and more micro scale.

Pearl. Watched this on a date. Horror done right. 9/10. She thought I would dislike it, but it was great. I read some bad reviews before watching as well and I'm at a loss at what movie these dudes (specifically dudes) watched, because the vast majority of their complaints didn't even exist in the movie.

And she won an Oscar for that role...good movie but tough movie

Aaand?

And have you seriously not seen even the first BP movie? It's one of the better MCU movies, not just of that Phase (3? I forget :old: ), but overall.

For anyone itchy about superhero movies and/or the MCU, Black Panther (2018) is a little bit super-spy, a little bit Games of Thrones royal family intrigue, and some Afrofuturist sci-fi. And it's a stand-alone story, unrelated to anything else going on in the MCU, so unlike some of their movies, you don't need to have watched anything else first, and it doesn't oblige you to watch anything after.

In fact, I would say this movie is must-watch science fiction. You don't even need to think of it as a superhero movie. The design alone (sets, vehicles, costumes) might be unique in the history of sci-fi films. Purely in terms of design, I think it's up there with the original Star Wars, Brazil, Blade Runner and The Fifth Element. We're like the guys in Chernobyl, stuck with the dosimeter that only goes up to 3.6 Roentgen; we don't even know what we're looking at. I think the Oscar ballot for "Best Costumes" the following year read,
  1. Ruth E. Carter, Black Panther
  2. Ruth E. Carter, Black Panther
  3. Ruth E. Carter, Black Panther
  4. Oh, Jesus Christ, just [freakin'] give it to her already. What are we even doing here?
It also had one of my all-time favorite trailers. Could be an all-time Top-5 trailer. Obviously, a good trailer doesn't always indicate a good film, but in this case it does. [Fig], now I wanna watch this movie again...

You might have deduced that from my saying that I hadn't watched Nyong'o in anything else than SW.

Well, that's the thing, y'see. Off the top of my head, I would have said that I'd also only 'seen' her in SWVIII:TFA.

But I had a nagging suspicion that she might have been in BP as well -- which turned out to be correct.

Yep..I just heard that at work. Sad. He was the man! RIP JEJ :(

Horizons was a tough watch for me, and I bunked with murderers in prison. Maybe it was a tough watch because I bunked with murderers. I know what it is to live with that tension, the possibility of violence every second, and Costner hit that note frequently. Along with all the certain violence. Very tough watch.

God made a great voice and attached a man to it. Jones could have been president for the asking just on the voice. I think he must be descended from a line of kings. Awesome presence.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Cruise is somehow worse in the sequel, but I liked it just as much if not more, in large part due to the supporting cast. I only know Cruise's counterpart as Maria Hill from the MCU, and she was quite good in this.

Mmmm... Cobie Sm(o)ulders...

If you can still find the series Stumptown on one of your streaming subs, that was pretty good fun. (Not sure where it came from originally, but I watched it via the Star subsection of Disney+). Only one season, unfortunately (13 eps? Each one's pretty much a self-contained story).

Finally saw two institutions: The Godfather and The Fast and the Furious. Both were not great and not worth the hype.

Curious about not liking the Godfather.

I think Apocalypse Now is Coppola's best, well above Godfather. Martin Sheen does a great job in that movie. The opening is an all time great. Helicopter blades morph into The Doors as destruction unfolds. Nihilistic and hopeless.

I agree. AN is a lot better than Godfather. Godfather1 was the best of that trilogy, and I blame it for birthing a trend of mafia films that lasted into the late 90s.
AN is also notable for maintaining the spirit of the book it was based on while altering the location drastically. Still, Dennis Hopper didn't do well and was also miscast (iirc the character in the book is a teen or similar, and juvenile instead of Hopper who was older and a drugged hippie).
