Which television shows are you watching? Part III

I binged The Boys last weekend. Excellent, just excellent. I dont know how the son of two actors like Jack Quaid pulls off "everyman" so well but he's good. The rest of the cast is great. Humorous and dark just like I like. One of the best series I've watched this year.

Can't wait for next season. Lots of cool stuff to watch for.

Was this based on a DC comic? The Seven is definitely a warped version of the Justice League. Homelander is Superman, Black Noir is Batman, A Train the Flash, Translucent is Martian Manhunter, Queen Maeve Wonder Woman, The Deep is Aquaman. Even Starlight reminds me of Star Girl.

Amazon's season 1 of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan was excellent.

I've been on the fence with that one. I canceled my Netflix (I basically do six mos on six mos off with that service) so maybe I'll have to check that out. I find with Prime the quality isn't always top priority so I'll sometimes wait til a show is out two or three seasons. I'll have to check it out.

Speaking of Amazon, is the Widow any good?

It wasn't DC Comics, but yes, the characters in The Boys certainly seem to be based on those characters. The comic was written by Garth Ennis, who also wrote Hellblazer and Preacher, both of which have gotten tv adaptations of their own.

I liked the show. I always like Wendell Pierce; Dina Shahabi and Ali Sulieman were both outstanding; but I never got next to Krasinki's version of Ryan. I think he was aiming for stoic and hit wooden by mistake. Looking forward to season 2, which seems to take place in Latin America. The first season didn't appear to be an adaptation of any of the Clancy books, but seeing the trailer for season 2 I couldn't help but think of A Clear and Present Danger.

was it Vertigo? They're owned by DC and that's where DC dumps their most controversial content. It gives off a modern day Watchmen vibe.

Hellblazer and Preacher were both Vertigo, I think. I don't know about The Boys. It definitely follows in Watchmen's footsteps, but with a sense of humor. I don't know if Alan Moore has ever written anything funny.

Started s1 of The Orville. So far not thrilled.
It starts out as just lame Seth McFarland humor but gets better as you go. Its essentially Star Trek except rather than following the best and brightest crew in Starfleet history you're following the B team that muddles through. Its actually pretty good once you come to that realization.

This $12.99/month Disney bundle looks like it might be... kinda worth it? It'll include the basic, ad-supported version of Hulu ($6), Disney+ ($7 or $70 for a year), and ESPN+ ($5).

I think ESPN+ has a 2-week trial, which I haven't done yet because I want to see whether they have any English Premiere League or Champions League games. It has MLS and the Summer "International Champions Cup" right now, but those obviously aren't the cream of the crop. Likewise, it has a deal with the UFC that doesn't include the pay-per-view events (I think ESPN+ subscribers might get a discount on the pay-per-views, but I bet they're still outside my price-range). They also show PFL matches, another MMA circuit, but I don't know if the PFL has the gravity to pull me in yet. I also want to see if ESPN+ has any of the Rugby World Cup, but they are showing the Rugby Championship right now. So I figure I'm going to do the free trial in the Fall.

Disney+ is going to start off light on content, although they will have Star Wars Episodes I-VII, plus Rogue One, and it's been an age since I've seen the original trilogy. From what I've seen, Disney+ won't include any of the 20th Century Fox library, at least not at launch. They will have all of Pixar's library at launch, except for the most-recent Toy Story 4. The Marvel library will be limited until the Netflix license expires, and none of the new MCU streaming series will be ready until next year.

With Hulu, you also get new ABC and Freeform series, either the day or a week after they air, in addition to their movies and old series. I subscribe to this one already, at $6 a month. I've been asking myself whether I use it frequently enough to justify the cost, but I haven't yet been moved to cancel it.

Worth keeping an eye on, at any rate.
I get all those on my regular cable subscription. Is Disney planning on withdrawing its channels and/or products from the regular grid altogether?

No.

And the bundle probably won't be available to non-US people anyways.

Disney has hopes of turning Hulu international, but who knows how long that'll take. ESPN... probably fat chance.

Good, because the standard cable subscription is already all that this household is prepared to pay.

I watched the second season of Derry Girls and it was even funnier than the first. I really wish the seasons were longer than six episodes though. Does anyone else think that James is gay?

Can't believe iZombie had four amazing seasons and completely screwed up the last one. Looked like they had half the budget as well.

Bi, maybe -- unless that Ukrainian(?) exchange-student (in S1 E5?) managed to put him off girls for life?

Well crap, the US Netflix series only has 2 seasons out so all of this is spoilers for me. :(

In the first two seasons he's depicted as effeminate in a way that usually signifies being in the closet in popular media.

Sorry, but I don't understand?

I was talking about Season 1, which you just said you'd seen? I mean that episode where a bunch of Ukrainian(?) exchange students arrive and they and the Girls (and James!) end up crashing (and burning) a party in their snobby classmate's expensive house...?

I haven't seen any of Season 2 yet, though, so please don't spoil me... ;)

I do not remember that at all.... I did start rewatching season 1 was I'll report back when I get to it. In any case, he is still depicted as effeminate in both seasons by the way he goes out of his way to say how interested he is in girls and totally not gay. There's some other stuff in Season 2 but I won't spoil it. In any case, they may just be playing with stereotypes intentionally to amuse and mislead without him actually being gay.

(I also just realized I misread S1 E5 as Season 5, Episode 1, my bad)

He's a teenage boy in the 90s: of course he goes out of his way to affirm his masculinity at every pass.
