I've now finished watching Deep Space Nine.



The series turned darker than I expected.

The darkness was sort of the saving grace of the series. Honestly it wasn't that good of a show before the war but the lead up to it, the war itself and the immediate aftermath were pretty legendary. Not only did we get to see giant fleet battles but the show picked up and ran with a bunch of themes that presaged the Battlestar Galactica reboot in an awesome way.

Btw, I think that "still to come" is more apt in this case, given the show production and run has finished, but Cutlass just hasn't gotten to the end yet.

I watched 5 episodes of Another Life. It is clearly targeted at millennials and is pretty terrible. It has every sci fi trope without any science or thought.

Damn that's sad, because I was thinking about checking that one out as well.

Right now it seems like the Netflix management is desperately trying to kickstart another SF series on the scale of The Expanse, but their scriptwriters/hacks apparently haven't learnt anything from the utter failure that was Nightflyers (IMHO, obviously: I watched Ep.1, didn't bother with the rest). Maybe they should just try optioning some decent sci-fi books to adapt in the first place (I'm still waiting for my Iain M Banks adaptations!).

On topic:

My wife and boys went camping the week before last (I didn't/don't have enough annual leave to go with them), so having the TV to myself for 4 evenings, I binged: Monday was Iron Man 2 + 3 (only saw them once, a while ago now), but Wednesday I ran through about half of Neon Genesis Evangelion (was actually looking to continue Cowboy Bebop which I started last year, but Netflix.de have apparently taken it off-stream since then), and then half of S1 of Trollhunters on Thursday (also still watching 3Below S2, just not last week).

Will probably finish both off piecemeal (even though Shinji is seriously annoying as a protagonist) on further evenings when I have the TV to myself. My younger son is now also watching Trollenjaeger (German dub), so if he catches up with me in the meantime, I'll watch with him.

For watching with wifey, although our collective enthusiam for Kimmy Schmidt seems to have tailed off partway through S4, she also started sitting down for Sabrina (now partway through S2), Jessica Jones (she watched the last couple of eps of S1, haven't started S2 yet) and Luke Cage (still on S1). I/we are also looking forward to Derry Girls S2, and GLOW S3.

You may indeed though I'd also have to check whether Netflix.de actually has that one (I don't remember seeing it trailed yet/at all).

(Based on what I'm seeing in these threads, our selection of possibilities generally seems to be more limited/ lower quality — e.g. quite a high ratio of straight-to-DVD-grade vs. wide-cinematic-release-grade movies — than offered by Netflix.com)

The Boys, through 5 episodes: When she was introduced, I thought Erin Moriarty's plucky, Midwestern teenager shtick was going to drive me up a wall, but to the contrary, I'm really liking her character and her performance. It was itching at me that she looked familiar, so I had to look her up: She played Hope Schlottman in season 1 of Jessica Jones.

The show is full of lmao moments for such a cynical premise. I had to pause and rewatch a couple of times.

This $12.99/month Disney bundle looks like it might be... kinda worth it? It'll include the basic, ad-supported version of Hulu ($6), Disney+ ($7 or $70 for a year), and ESPN+ ($5).

I think ESPN+ has a 2-week trial, which I haven't done yet because I want to see whether they have any English Premiere League or Champions League games. It has MLS and the Summer "International Champions Cup" right now, but those obviously aren't the cream of the crop. Likewise, it has a deal with the UFC that doesn't include the pay-per-view events (I think ESPN+ subscribers might get a discount on the pay-per-views, but I bet they're still outside my price-range). They also show PFL matches, another MMA circuit, but I don't know if the PFL has the gravity to pull me in yet. I also want to see if ESPN+ has any of the Rugby World Cup, but they are showing the Rugby Championship right now. So I figure I'm going to do the free trial in the Fall.

Disney+ is going to start off light on content, although they will have Star Wars Episodes I-VII, plus Rogue One, and it's been an age since I've seen the original trilogy. From what I've seen, Disney+ won't include any of the 20th Century Fox library, at least not at launch. They will have all of Pixar's library at launch, except for the most-recent Toy Story 4. The Marvel library will be limited until the Netflix license expires, and none of the new MCU streaming series will be ready until next year.

With Hulu, you also get new ABC and Freeform series, either the day or a week after they air, in addition to their movies and old series. I subscribe to this one already, at $6 a month. I've been asking myself whether I use it frequently enough to justify the cost, but I haven't yet been moved to cancel it.

Worth keeping an eye on, at any rate.
