I had a friend who used to commute 90 minutes to elementary school, and 120 minutes if he ever wanted to visit 'town'... but then again, I think that I have a skewed conception of a normal commute since the nearest city to mine is... well over 1000 kilometers away.

Yeah, this. The nearest civilised center is like 2800 kilometers away.

Hahah... well, the distance to Edmonton, Alberta is 1512 km, 1486 km to Vancouver, British Columbia, 800 km to Anchorage, Alaska... if I'll count towns the same size as my own (20 000ish), then Dawson Creek is only 1034 km away, but these are all values as the crow flies, so the roads actually make it a good bit further, seeing as they're all winding through the Rocky Mountains.
