While We Wait: Boredom Strikes Back

Would online activity (whether it is NESing or discussion of political topics) be considered during the college application process? For example, could I make an argument that my experiences as a moderator and player positively influenced my leadership skills, present my orders as logical and rational decision-making based on a multitude of historical sources and situational evidence, present any alternative history written as exemplary examples of my writing, etc?

You could, and it would be a very hilarious joke.

Damn tried to use mibbit with the phone, loads but cannot type.

Actually, I'm quite curious:

It wholly depends on how good you personally are as an alt-hist writer :p. I have not personally read any of your stuff, but if it's even close to that of Dachs, Symphony D., das, Masada, etc etc etc, then my answer is sure. As long as you fit it in nicely that is (1). If you're applying to UChicago, that may be the place where this could fit in the best (if their applications are as zany as when I did mine).

But really, standing out is actually good. Sure looking like a weirdo is weird, but if you can fit in something unique (whatever it may be) nicely, that's a bonus.

(1) The problem is that it would be hard to fit NESing in nicely. And I have no idea what admissions people would think if you were to submit a whole alt-hist as a supplement; never thought of asking the admissions people I know about supplements.

Care to provide links to your althists?

Ah, that was actually a hypothetical scenario. I haven't written any alternate histories of actual note, unless you count that Kaiserreich NES I had a while ago (which was more of me compiling stuff previously written, clarifying, etc.)

Ah well then IMO this is no better than being like, really good at a video game.

We have another thread for that, and it needs more activity anyway. :p

:(

I thought that was more for where if you wrote a time line to discuss, but okay I can simply post the question there.

Disclaimer: I do not read college application essays for fun or as a job.

I think the success of such an essay would hang on two points: first, is the story compelling? Is your writing interesting? And second, will the reader know what you talking about? Many people over 40 are not familiar with internet forums and won't understand your topic at all. Keep in mind that just because you frequent such places, not everyone does. I am quite surprised how many of those people in positions of authority now are so illiterate in both the internet and technology. If 35 year olds are reading the essays, fine, but if it is someone over 40 or 50, you may miss the target altogether.

I would suggest that if you want to include internet stuff as the basis for an essay, keep it to the setting and tell a story about people. For example, you might use the recent April Fools prank as an example of how it made you realized how important your internet friends are to you and how you structure your time. The idea of such an important aspect of your social life being dismantled blah blah blah. You focus on the drama of people who happen to be connected by the internet.

Hey guys, I'm slighty embarrassed about this but after a week I realized that I have much more free time than I can deal with and nothing else to put it to. I decided that NESing is still the best way for free time for me.

However, I still have reprioritized my studies to their appropriate times.

Therefore I HAVE RETURNED TO ALL MY CURRENT NESES, however, I won't send make-up orders unless asked because I'm not sure if they would be accepted. Also, please understand I will participate less often than normal. Thanks everyone!

That's just funny.

Dachs is a meanie for forcing me to leave #nes.

AND I CAN'T EVEN WATCH THE YOUTUBES BECAUSE THE INTERNET HERE SUCKS
I didn't force you to do anything. I was trolling Kentharu. Badly.

I do not want to be a member of a community that permabans people depending on whatever banner likes that person or not. I do not want to be member of a community that takes swearing, insulting and disagreeing with someone (and then banning/insulting them) as "normal" or acceptable behaviour.

When I first joined #Nes I hoped to get greeted by a community that is same accepting and nice as is CFC, in the beginning it was. Since then there have been events like, constantly insulting, banning without warning or reason other than "I don't like him" and even perma banning. Since then, my Operator rights have been demoted to half-op, voiced and even no-rights. This has been done constantly, I take it very personally, because I've invested a lot of my time into Keeping peace and order in #Nes trying to make it a place that would be "good".

Yet I don't feel that I've been doing bad job as a moderator or that I've done something wrong. I believed and still believe that #Nes could be/is a place for NESers to meet, where it does not matter what religion, sex or political beliefs you have but what NESes are you in. Obviously, It already is like that and I'm mistaken or blind, because I don't see it as a good thing where this no good thing. So, I decided to leave. Obviously #Nes handles itself fine without me. Obviously banning everyone for personal reasons for !longer! than 12 hours is acceptable even if people would like to chat with that person. Obviously my (un)banning and other peace keeping deeds, are not worthy enough to be on the level of #Nes and my skills and services are not needed. I assume that for people removing my hop rights. Obviously I'm not the brightest head in the box, but I don't feel I've done anything wrong.

Good luck to you all, because I can not accept current #Nes policies as mod or a member. I can not accept being demoted for my beliefs, as I don't think they are wrong at least about Banning and kicking policies. Sorry, if I insulted someone, that was not my intention. Just wanted to let you know how I feel.

/me goes and
