Who do you write like?

I took samples from two essays I wrote - the two I'm probably most proud of.

You know, that does make me want to see what my two bestest essays ever get...

Alright, the first one is a ten page one from a couple years ago was a paper using the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum physics and Campbell's Hero's Journey as the basis to analyzing a character from the anime Clannad. Yes, it's as hilariously humanities as it sounds, but I immensely enjoyed it and so did the humanities school at my uni. Anyhow I threw that one in and got Arthur Clarke, no idea why; probably because of the few occasional references to quantum physics, maybe.

The second one was a twenty-nine page research paper, my pride and joy, concerning the remnants of Manichean influence on early modern and present-day Chinese society and culture, particularly in regards to triads, cults and other unorthodox religions/groups. That one turned up HP Lovecraft. I guess maybe because Manicheans are weird.

I don't think this thing is really designed for academic papers.

I get that impression too... especially since the writers it spouts out are, well, mostly fiction writers from what I can see.

I went through my longish essay-like posts on 4 different websites and the site tells me I write like H. P. Lovecraft each time.

Interestingly though, when I tried putting in my reddit posts, I got a different result each time. I tried 7 of my longer reddit posts and got 7 different responses back.

I put in some of my longer emails, and got one Dan Brown and several Cory Doctorow and Chuck Palahnik.

I put in several posts here (some from off-topic but mostly from the FfH2 Lore subforum) and got Mary Shelley, William Shakespeare, J. R. R. Tolkien, Edgar Allan Poe, Ursula K. Le Guin, David Foster Wallace, Mario Puzo, James Joyce, Jonathan Swift, Anne Rice, and H. P. Lovecraft.

What I wrote:

The man stared at his glowing computer screen, not knowing what to type. It was like trying to paint without a canvas. He had no inspiration, whatsoever. He looked around his room, looking for inspiration. Somehow a story about lamps or a desk would be about as interesting as a Paint Drying Contest. He sighed, asking God to give him inspiration. Just then, his tummy rumbled like Jello in a 9.5 earthquake.

He walked out of his room to devour some morsels. His a-dog-able puppy was sleeping like a hibernating bear. The man walked to his fridge and opened it. The cold air hit him as if he just walked outside naked in Antarctica. The puppy was awakened by the fridge being opened. This little puppy was at a stage where he liked to bite a lot. His bites were like a vice with nails glued to it. He walked over to his master and bit him on the ankle. The man screamed so loud it was audible at the Earth's core. Luckily, the pain gave him an idea for what to write. He dashed to his room faster than the speed of light. He sat at his computer and wrote a tale about cannibalism.

What I got:

Arthur Clarke

Pretty good. :)

I have no idea who Chuck Palahniak and Cory Doctorow are, but I'd feel pleased and honored to have the others come up. :)

Danke.

I ran a few of my pieces. The older stuff was compared to Tolkien. The later stuff I got mostly Douglas Adams on.

I put in a few of my articles, and got both Kurt Vonnegut and David Foster Wallace, both of which I can see.

In real life, like most people in my position, I'd say I've been heavily influenced by Bill Simmons, among others.

J. R. R. Tolkien. I'm not surprised, because I was writing something like him.

Then, tried something different and got David Foster Wallace. Tbh, I don't know him.

I submitted 3 random posts, and I got Stephen King for all 3. Does not bode well for mister King.

This one resulted in Mark Twain

Including the result, James Joyce.

Including both results, I got turtles

I'm surprised no one here has gotten Ayn Rand or Hunter S. Thompson. I'm going to try and emulate Thompson's writing style later.

You lucky ducky.

I posted excerpts from the report on my research project and it told me I write like Stephen King and H.P Lovecraft. Apparently scientific writing is horror writing.

I do not think it is even valid (I got Stephen King) and my writing well - to say it blunt n' simple : sucks ! No way ! that I am to compare to the King , no way ! I do not believe it !

Probably all those Alien Life Forms and such   ;)

I got a different person each time.

In real life, like most people in my position, I'd say I've been heavily influenced by Bill Simmons, among others.
Meaning, you insist on doing podcasts and writing articles no one cares about, instead of an NBA column? And you only produce something once a week?
