Also: Nice try, but nope... you don't get to do this. You can't point out that you said "major" wars but then ignore that I said "American deaths". You can't demand that I adhere to the parameters of your example while simultaneously trying to expand the parameters of mine.

If you're restricting to American deaths, by those rules people who die in internment camps for unlicensed border crossers can't count against Trump. Either it's only American deaths, or global deaths, put at the feet of either that count in both cases. That's not a bias, but more something a debate moderator would do.

This quote from a CNN article about Senate Republicans and their response to Trump's...ummmm...unique presidential style could be subtitled "where a political party goes to die."

"Many in difficult reelection races avoid answering questions from reporters, taking back staircases and entrances to avoid areas where the press congregates."

When you are campaigning the press is your life. Air time to get your face and your voice to the public costs a mountain of money. A reporter willing to give you airtime for free is the greatest boon that circumstances can send your way. Trump having them buried in a deluge of questions they cannot face to the point that they are scurrying like cockroaches at sight of a camera is the most remarkable feature of this election cycle. I genuinely never imagined the like.
It's like that mafia game a couple of months ago in which I refused to post and so people refused to vote me out until it was too late and I ended up winning as mafia. They're in antispew mode.

Yeah but slanking and campaigning are technically not compatible.

We are talking about the same Lord who drowned all humans except one family in a fit of pique right? Same Lord who turned Job's wife into a pillar of salt for looking back?
*Lot's wife. C'mon Lex get it right:p

And it wasn't for "looking back" it was, in a general sense, for "disobedience" because she was specifically instructed by the angels to run away from the city and not to look back. But more specifically and perhaps more esoterically, it was because they were fleeing a city of naughtiness and wickedness, where people were doing evil things like having sex with whoever the eff they wanted, being homosexual, gambling, drinking and basically having too much fun... and also failing to worship the one true god blessed be his holy name...

But she, devil-woman that she was... didn't really want to leave, she, unbelievable and incredible as it sounds, had the temerity to actually regret having to leave her home and belongings in that wretched hive of scum and villainy... so in a moment of regret and despair, she looked back to see her home burning to the ground... which demonstrated that she wasn't fully faithful, her heart wasn't fully invested in what she was ordered to do. So as punishment, god killed her, and that right soon.

Now Job's wife... she was the one who encouraged her husband to "curse God and die" as a result of the heavenly father having elected to allow Satan to slaughter Job's entire family, except his wife, including killing all 10 of his children (along with all his vast herds of assorted livestock) and afflict Job with a horrific disease that caused boils and blisters all over his body... All over a bet that the almighty had with Satan, that Job only worshiped god and was a good servant, due to him being rich and blessed.

This is the point where in response to his wife's admonition, Job delivers his famous line "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away... let the name of the Lord continue to be blessed". So then a reward for his faith, Job was given a bunch of new children and livestock and such, so I'm sure that totally made him get over the dead ones. No harm, no foul.

So hopefully that clears things up, demonstrates your error... and totes redeems god.

I think of that more as fair warning than a test of obedience. "Look, we are gonna unleash on this place and just seeing it would have consequences so don't look back." I mean, if you look after that surely it's on you, right?

 I'm sure we're both sad that the order of the universe and life are not designed as we wish. General trend seems to be it gets worse and worse over time until you check out. God, in the biblical sense you go over, is going to wreck and destroy and melt every single person and every single thing regardless of righteousness. That general truth is unavoidable with or without your spiritual tormentor. All there is left is to decide how to address that reality and what to do with it. Job does redeem God as God redeems his suffering, making something decent out what was going to be pain regardless.

Every now and then there's a new minister trying on their uncomfortable Methodist fire and brimstone "God could destroy you," our most recent one said. All I was sitting there thinking was "Could? Will." Job isn't supposed to be feel good. Job explains how the world works to the righteous man. The call for action for Godly morality, if you add it on, comes with the New, not the Old. Despite the fact that we wind up with the world we have, not the world we would want.

back in the days Erich von Danieken was famous this was explained as she stood behind or didn't take cover during the nuclear anhilation , so it was radiation sickness on an immediate level and whatever . Do not be godless like automatically .

Of course it was on her. God made that **** abundantly clear.

Ultimately, what Job teaches is that we are all pawns in the bigger game. You can have faith, or not and either way God doesn't owe you ****.

Close enough. I like to think of it as faith being a hammer, not a shield. You can build with it, you can sharpen the edge of your work, but it's not going to save you. It must have a different purpose.

Shaking hands without gloves in a crowded place is very risky, you never know how many other hands have already shook that hand before the moment.

"A spiritual armor to protect your soul through times that try it" or something like that, sure. If you want to run it that way. The same concept can be presented with a different focus. The hammer being your motivation and adding gravity to your strokes stands in for the spiritual bulwark.

Who knows, maybe some people have a faith that makes things bounce off them more frequently. Maybe that makes sense to them. Mine doesn't really seem to do that very often even when it's working best. Sometimes, though, it keeps me moving. At least it has for a while. But it won't forever, so if it's to have a purpose, might as well make it something not completely futile.

That does not work/make sense. As has already been pointed out. The simple, easy, obvious and correct way to express that is for Republicans/Conservatives to say, "Republicans are bad. Democrats are worse." They are well aware of this. So there is a reason that they instead choose to say "both sides are bad" and it is because they want to express equal badness, for all the reasons that I and others have laid out. You're blaming WW2 and the Civil War on Biden??? :dubious: This is the 2020 election thread. Please state the wars that you're blaming on Biden.

When have you heard a Democrat or Republican say their side is equally bad? Kinda defeats the point of being a Democrat or Republican if there is no sense of moral superiority. Why does a person who thinks both parties are bad need to identify which one is worse? Cant they both be bad regardless.

I wont vote for Trump or Biden, it doesn't matter to me which one is worse. They're both killers, maybe that goes with the territory. So which killer is worse? Biden, count the bodies. That doesn't convince me to vote for the other killer.

I must have missed these reasons why a Republican would say their side is just as bad as the other, but why is that a knock on them? Seems like an honest assessment. Somebody said covid (Trump) had killed more Americans than the major wars. You mentioned Vietnam and Korea but for some reason ignored WWII and the civil war was the biggest of them all.

I already said what war, he voted to invade Iraq. His role in Libya, Syria, Yemen, etc etc is another matter. Was he an internal critic or cheerleader? Was he obliged to speak out or resign? Or did he remain loyal to war criminals?

As a kid I always had some doubts on why books like Esther, Daniel, Job etc were added to the biblical canon. They were clearly not the real thing. More a kind of interesting side stories from the time the Jews were living in Babylon.
When my father could get hold of a book with all the biblical apocrypha books, and used that as well in reading a quarter of an hour after every dinner with us all still sitting on the table, this pondering on those choices by the churchfathers of in/out the canon only increased.

OK so you're going with the Iraq War, fine. The American deaths in that war are around 4,000, so even putting aside that Biden was never President during that war, Trump's 197,000 coronavirus American death toll clearly dwarfs anything you can blame on Biden. Even if you add Libya, Syria and Yemen their American death tolls are much smaller by comparison, so it doesn't move the needle. Trump is way worse.

Now on the other hand, if you want to blame Biden, who again wasn't even President... for global deaths, due to the Iraq War, not just American deaths, OK... but to quote Patine:
Either it's only American deaths, or global deaths
Again... thanks for pointing that out Patine.

So global deaths from the Iraq War are about 400,000 on the low end to 660,000 on the high end. Global deaths from coronavirus are over 950,000. So either way. Trump is worse.

Dude, your country is just the northern end of South (and soon to be majority Latin) America now. It hasn't sunk in yet, but that's what it is, sadly.

Yeah, that God guy definitely a sociopath.

Bill Maher has a bit about how Trump is very, very similar to the old testamant god (moody, needing constant praise & proof of one's loyalty, prone to angry mood swings, etc)
