Altered Maps ΙΓ: To make a map larger than what it maps.

That Italian north-south divide

I mean I know it exists but it's so much more pronounced that I thought
I was surprised it was so small. Must have gotten smaller in the 90s or something.

Well, between omnipresent corruption and widespread institutional dysfunction southern Italy has managed to maintain high unemployment in the face of repeated massive stimulus and permanent subsidy for decades before the Euro was even remotely close to any hope of ever being a thing.

Unemployment in Europe:
Wow, that's like the coolest thing ever.

What is that small high employment dot in Belgium? Brussels?

Interesting how Eastern Germany and Poland haven't been hit so hard by the crisis and are doing better now than in 2002.

It seems many cities (Hamburg, Berlin, London, Birmingham(?), Brussels) are doing bad compared to the surrounding countryside. I would expect unemployment to be lower in cities.

In the case of Poland at least, the economy has been growing at a good rate for quite a while now, as far as I know. There's also the whole "everybody left" thing :p People moving to the UK looking for work there drives down Poland's unemployment numbers.

It's as if someone had moved all the unemployed people from Eastern Germany and Poland to Southern Europe, Ireland & the Baltics.

Since there is the concurrent thread on islam in England, a wiki map i just googled of muslim populations in that country:

Slovakia's Hungarian minority:

Let's hope that the extent of Viktor Orbán's inspiration with Russia doesn't go that far... :mischief:

How large a part of the Hungarians in Slovakia wants to join Hungary? It's my impression that the economic situation in Slovakia is much better than Hungary's.

Iirc Hungary doesn't. Hungary wants their own empire of some decades:

Which looks a bit like an agitated aardvark :)

(notice how the part "to Slovakia" is simply all of Slovakia :) ).

Nobody. Well, perhaps a few people, but the vast majority doesn't care enough; they have a political representation, their rights are not violated and it works fine. I know a lot of Slovaks and some of them are Slovak Hungarians - those are perfectly bilingual and have no issue with this. At most they want some sort of greater cultural autonomy in those regions where they constitute a majority, but I don't really know what that is supposed to mean.

That doesn't mean than the Slovak nationalists (Ján Slota et al.) didn't take advantage of the minority card in the past, but their popularity has fallen below 5% in the last several elections.

Too bad; chances are, they aren't getting any.

Jobbik, on the other hand, is among the most powerful far-right parties in Europe, with over 20% electoral share.
