Why straight borders, why?

Because it was quicker.

If they are only island survivors, I doubt there would be that many of them to constitute such large amounts of land. 28 years later, at most, you would see city-states, maybe a small empire or two, but nothing on the scale you have going.

Not only a few individuals but the whole country. Imagine a modern, fully industrialized Japan (125m citizens) next to vast lands with largely intact infrastructure, ripe for taking. But you got a point with north and south Cyprus, Jamaica etc . Also, Indonesia should have a bit more considering they're 200+ million crammed up within their current borders.

WW2 in Europe ended in 1947. The Germans invaded the USSR in 1942 and by 1945 they had captured Moscow and nearly made it to the Ural mountains. The British invaded the German-occupied Caucasus and southern Russia, which allowed the Soviets to concentrate their forces on a narrower front and start pushing the Germans (who were out of manpower by then) back.

The Allies staged an invasion of the Balkans through Greece and Yugoslavia, but the Germans pushed them back into the sea. The second invasion through the Netherlands was more successful. A year or so later, the Americans have captured Berlin and a few months later Germany surrendered to the Allies. Romania and Bulgaria continued resisting, but the Allies crushed them after landing in Greece for the second time. Italy surrendered without being invaded, I don't know why - but it's Italy so it wasn't exactly unexpected

Why didn't the real WW2 end like that?! (Well, Düsseldorf got nuked and Finland was turned into a Soviet puppet state, but overall the result is much better than in OTL.)

One or two provinces in Poland are held by the Soviets, and a couple odd provinces inside the USSR are held by the British. Other than that, it's surprisingly neat. I am really positively surprised by this yet-another-mod-made-into-a-stand-alone-game (and it runs so fast compared to the standard HoI2 game it's almost unbelievable. It's really not a problem at all to just let the game run its course and watch. Normally it would get so slow by 1942 that you'd be bored to death - not with DH).

Yeah, I know about the speed, I tried it and it certainly runs fast. DH is a great game, especially the map, but what I'd like most is having it merged with AoD and certain feature it has, like the production system, stats etc. Never gonna happen though, just hope that DH will be polished well through patches.

Soviets took the places in the final months of the war. The Germans pretty much collapsed once the Americans broke through the front in the West. USSR just wasn't quick enough to take something in the West - it just managed to rape Finland again (it was conquered 3 times I believe - first by the Soviets in 1942, then later "liberated" by the Germans, then "liberated" again by the USSR and released as a Communist puppet state. Oh, and Norway had it even worse - it was conquered by the Germans first, then the British nearly liberated it, then the Germans returned, then the Americans came, only to be pushed back into the sea by the Germans, then the Americans invaded again, losing to the Germans a few months later, and then finally the Americans liberated it for good. I wonder what was left of the country when the war ended
