WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (AP) -- Conservative columnist Ann Coulter has refused to cooperate in an investigation into whether she voted in the wrong precinct, so the case will probably be turned over to prosecutors, Palm Beach County's elections chief said Wednesday.

Elections Supervisor Arthur Anderson said his office has been looking into the matter for nearly nine months, and he would turn over the case to the state attorney's office by Friday.

Coulter's attorney did not immediately return a call Wednesday. Nor did her publicist at her publisher, Crown Publishing.

Knowingly voting in the wrong precinct is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Anderson's office received a complaint in February that Coulter voted in the wrong precinct during a February 7 Palm Beach town council election.

Anderson said a letter was sent to Coulter on March 27 requesting that she clarify her address for the voting records "or face the possibility of her voter registration being rescinded." Three more letters were sent to Coulter and her attorney, but she has yet to respond with the information requested, Anderson said.

In July, Anderson said, he received a letter from Coulter's attorney, Marcos Daniel Jimenez D'Clouet. The letter said the attorney would only discuss the matter in person or by telephone because, he complained, Anderson had given details to the media. Anderson said the matter had to be discussed in writing.

The right-wing commentator also authored a book that said some September 11 widows were "enjoying their husbands' deaths."

I knew when I woke up that today was going to be a good day. :)

That ought to lower the crime rate. Who would want to risk being be stuck in a jail cell with Adam's Apple Ann?

Godwynn: Your last quote is ironic.
JollyRoger: Not quite valid since men can still commit crimes without the risk.

Edit: she vote in a wrong precinct and I did my test in a wrong section.

How would they now she'd gone to the wrong precinct? She must have registered to the wrong one, then? How can you do that, unless you use the wrong address?

I certainly don't wish her the chair, though I dislike what she is. 5 years sounds brutal.

(Oh, and the bit about wanting a 'face to face' is pretty funny if you know the subtext. In law, we tend to insist on everything being in writing (though it's a pain) if we don't trust the other party for a good reason)

No one is 100% sure that Ann is actually a woman, so there is no telling which side of the jailhouse "she" would be detained.

5 years sounds pretty ridiculous for a (seemingly) minor crime.

On the other hand, I really hope she does get some jail time :D

Since it's "up to 5 years", she could get away with a large bail money and community service.

Links?

Here's hoping that it's roadside garbage duty...

Oh, it's unlikely she'll actually serve 5 years, unless she really screws up in court.

I still wonder how innocently someone can register in the wrong district? It seems (to me) to be a tough thing to do, even if you intended to.

What a supreme waste of taxpayer money. I'm glad I dont live in Florida anymore.

If she wasnt Ann Coulter, this would be stupid. I would think proving someone did this purposefully a fairly large burden of proof.
The thread would be exactly the same if Michael Moore was under investigation for this act.

Personally, this makes no difference to me. I'm sure Coulter would spin another book if she is indeed sent to the big house (though I doubt it'd be for the maximum).

This just in:

"Michael Moore brought up on charges of jaywalking."

"Al Franken facing prosecution for an illegal right turn on red."

Ann Coulter is a Cornell graduate and finished in the top 10% of her class at the University of Michigan law school. She presents herself as an authority on the law and politics in particular. It would seem the prosecutor could get pretty far along in meeting the burden of proof that Ann knew she was voting in a district she did not live in - after all - she is very intelligent by all objective standards. Not a slam dunk for the prosecutor, but not a slam dunk for Ms. Coulter either.

West Palm Beach again? You think they'd have learned their lesson after they sent their attack dogs after Rush Limbaugh.
