AntiAmericanism

"Noone is the greatest" is such a copout. Just admit it.

Well if you really want to determine what the greatest place to live is then I would say either HDI or Quality of Life indexes are a good indicators. You won't like what you see though if you look up the figures.:mischief:

Eh, countries around the world are coming into their own and it is only natural that in that enviroment they define themselves in part as being different from, and thus irrelevantly hostile to, the established power.

When you guys raise a teenager, it will all become clear to you.

I didn't ask for criteria. I asked you to name a country. As usual, big fail.

I'd say it take a certain kind of CFC OT American posters... but yeah, I agree, highly ironic :)
Well, mostly from 1 poster. Its kinda like any debate, the shrillest voices get the most attention, but they don't speak for everyone.

The reason I mention criteria is because there's too many ways to rank the countries of the world and if you want to say the greatest then you've got to use some sort of criteria.

Well ok since you want me to name countries here's the top five countries in the world for HDI, which the UN uses to measure both the economic and social wellbeing of countries:

1. Iceland
2. Norway
3. Australia
4. Canada
5. Ireland

The Economist's 2005 Quality of Life tables had this top five:

1. Ireland ( Definately not top by now )
2. Switzerland
3. Norway
4. Luxembourg
5. Sweden

The HDI figure is a far better indicator in my opinion.

I'm not saying that the US is a bad place to live theres not a huge amount of difference between say 5th and 15th in these rankings; but the best? Maybe if you're in the top 5% wealthiest people in the US but otherwise no.

Which would easily lead one to conclude the Norway and most of the Nordic countries would fit quite well the criteria. :) Yet you don't see them bragging about that, but rather trying to solve the problems that exist (because problems will always exist). LordRahl's post is a good example why many average people (reasonable people, that are not trying to find something to hate) don't like the US.

And on top of that, I'd like to say that the term AntiAmericanism is wrong, since one can easily be against the USA but looove, let's say, Chile... Which is also in America. A more appropriate term than Anti-Americanism would be Anti-USA-ism, which would be less arrogant towards Americans that don't live in the US. ;)

Yeah I can safely say that having lived in Ireland in 2005, it was and still isn't anywhere special. Theres lots of problems here.

Exactly. :) And I believe sticking your head in the sand and saying "we're the best you're just jealous" won't exactly lead to progress...

@mirc: Anti-USianism?

@Shekwan: I do not care what your criteria is. Just name the greatest country. Just one. Is that SO difficult?

If you are wealthy, religious and care about patriotistm than the USA is definetly the greatest place for you to live in. If however you are an atheist, middle class income and don't give a ***** about patriotism than you better live in:
1. France or Italy if you're main concern is about eating well ;-)
2. Australia if you're main concern is about having fun and sunbathing ;-)
3. Luxembourg if you want to make money
4. Slovakia if you looooooooooooooooooooooove beatifull chicks ;-)

Well ok then I'd have to go with Norway at the moment.

They're consistenly top of socioeconomic rankings, and even more impressive is the fact that they've achieved all of this without giving up any sovereignty to Brussels. I'm pretty sure they're one of the only countries in Europe that is not a net importer of energy supplies too.

...Cue the Norwegians getting uppitty and the birth of anti-Norwegianism...

For the record, I'm a dual citizen of USA and Norway, so I win either way. :D

I made this thread to try to convince people who accuse others of being "antiAmerican" that criticisms against the US can be perfectly valid. I think I failed miserably.

On the contrary, you have created a venue for "ugly" Americans to demonstrate why they are so despicable. Well done!
