Any way to reduce effect of railroads?

I never liked the instantaneous transportation effect of railroads in Civ3. Afterall, anyone who has taken a train (in the USA at least) knows that they don't move much faster than highway traffic. The problem is exacerbated when you are creating a scenario set in the 1860s when trains were way slower. Is there anyway to reduce the effect of railroads similar to the way you can change the movement value of roads? I've got the editor that came with PTW...

Sadly not. I've been there, wanted it, tried everything, posted on the forum, but to no avail. You can affect the speed of roads, but not railroads :( .

Ahh not really a solution but is the bridge river option able to stop railroadmovement?
Hmm well as I said not really a solution but in a scenario with preset maps it might work somehow....

One way I theorised was to create periodic gaps in the railroad which will slow things down. However, there's nothing to stop the AI just bridging those gaps short of preventing them buidling RR at all.

I don't think so but I never tried that. i have a feeling that the RR would simply override the river movement penalty. Still, might be a thing to try!

One other methode to get rid of the common railroad in fixed maps could be the use of landmark terrain. For the graphics you can use resource graphics or some of the terrain buildings. This railroad is not destructable.

When you set this terrain to movement cost "0" you have an effect like the old railroad, but when this railroad goes over other terrain, rivers and so on, movement points are used. You can even use the movement cost/ignore movement cost flag for certain units.

This is only an idea. I have never tested it til now. :)

Many people believe that the current RR system is bad, but IMHO it is muuuch better than the Civ4 system, where you are limited to 10 tiles, thus in the end of the game it might take 2 years to move a tank across a continent.

Yes, I remember that it was a poll where the unlimited system got 5% of the votes and the 10 tiles limit got 75% or something :). So I shouldn't even write about this. I'm a 1 hp warrior compared to a 5 hp Modern Armor :).

yeah i also think the railrpadsolution is not the best (civ3and 4) what I like very much in late ages are airlifting planes (there are some mods like balacer) which can transport some units by rebasing. thats perfect cause it can be a kind of infinite movement (but just to cities(even without airport) and airfields) if you have enough transport capacity....

Considering that each turn (except in a rare few scenarios and mods) represents at LEAST a year, I think the RR work just fine... It only took me 2 weeks to drive 6000 miles (I went from CA to FLA to PA), not an entire year... Besides, the Bullet trains in Japan can go from Tokyo to Kyoto in about 3 hours (600 mi or so)... WHat I don't find particularly realistic is lat-game naval movememt.... It only took my ship 2 months to get to the Gulf (approximately halfway around the world) rather than 2 or more years (like your typical civ 3 armada).... Besides, I love the terrain bonuses from RR.

My last game had a defending spear take 2 off a MA!
:crazyeye: Madness! Maybe the spear was elite and on a mountain and across a river and maybe the MA's where red-lined. And it would be hard to happen even like this!

@Hikaro Takayama: Finally, someone has the same opinion as me!

The C3X mod on here works nicely - fixes bugs, improves the AI (especially with artillery and armies) and you can set the railway speed! I repalced railways with a paved road graphic for a fantasy version and gave them a speed of 6. You can't change the tile production bonus as far as I can see though. I just noticed how old this thread is... Ha.

Actually, thanks for bumping it. I have been thinking that same thing about rail speeds. I do change the speeds of more modern naval units based on the size of the map. Currently, I am up to the speed of the carrier, destroyer, and cruisers being 12 without bonuses, but may go higher. I tend to like huge maps, 300 X 240 or more with lots of water, either archipelago or continents.
