Are we headed for dystopia?

Yes, we are headed for dystopia. In some ways it's already here. It's just a short journey to something like The Handmaid's Tale (fundamentalist theocracy where women who can bear children to the elite are literally nameless property and aren't even allowed to read), or the Total Welfare Centers of F.M. Busby's Young Rissa.

We already are in a Dystopia. Besides all the political stuff, I don't think anybody would look at the massive obesity everywhere and think "yeah, the future looks good!"

As far as all the political stuff, people already know how I feel about the police/surveillance state.

if we are, where's my soma?

Do you prefer Xanax or Prozac? Perhaps some Ritalin?

Funny about Brave New World... ...I could not figure out if it was meant to be dystopian or not, actually.
Many dystopian books have a majority populace quite unaware they are living in one.

I spent 35 days in the mountains these past couple months. Do you know what that is like, and then come back to the beeping and booping and having to waste hours of your life on hold or listening to an automated customer service recording try to sell you a different long distance plan?

I'm still betting long on The Handmaid's Tale basically coming true in the United States within 100 years, and then gloriously collapsing within twenty. It will be a brutal but necessary lesson to purge America's latent Theocracy gene.

pretty sure it's Bush's fault....

Golly! Really? :shudder:

Care to elaborate, for those who don't know the story? :)

Wrong dystopia. We're moving towards the cyberpunk kind. The USA with it's privatised prisons, mercenary armies and increasingly corrupt government is already half-way there.

Where are the replicant prostitutes and the c-beams?

OH

So you're a Luddite?

Explains a lot, really.

Spoilered to save some members' data allowance.

Spoiling doesn't prevent things from loading and even if it did, the data used by a youtube video that doesn't autoplay is comparable to a picture of the same size as the video.

I also dislike fat people

Oh. OK. Thanks for the information.

The Handmaid's Tale is truly worth reading yourself. If you haven't. And it's not long or difficult. And set in the US. And credible (though fantastic). Anything more might spoil the story.
