Ashoka (Dhammaraja), World Renouncer / World Conqueror - Leader Discussion

So we got a persona called "world renouncer", and when you google it, all the results point to a book which, curiously enough, presents this title as part of a dualism, the other being "world conqueror". That would fit Ashoka quite well, or at least a pop culture understanding of him. What's further interesting is that this dualism seems to be used to analyze the relationship between Buddhsim and politics. Now for the punchline: it's about Thailand, not India. But persona titles might be superficial enough to allow translocate the concept.

Now, I wonder if Firaxis might have anyone on their team who is an expert on Thailand and is familiar with Tambiah's book, and could've suggested those titles as a neat fit to describe the dualism represented by the personas... ;)

He introduces himself in game as both world renouncer and world conquerer too. I think it’s from the Switch footage.

Considering we saw in Civ 6 that personas don't necessarily get new lines, just new looks, Ashoka having two personas and his dialogue introducing himself as both is a neat way to both acknowledge and work around it without having to record more lines than necessary.

I wonder if they will not include Gandhi in Civ 7.
I find it hard to believe they would leave him out. And while he's not a close fit to any of the Indian civs in the game, Amina isn't closely associated with the civs that she has for 'historical choices' for. It seems that they will let that slide.

I'm crossing my fingers that we've finally ditched Gandhi...but even if we have I wouldn't be surprised to see him crop up in DLC (just like Civ6 Alex).

Ashoka, World Renouncer (Base Game)

Lauded as a chakravartin, a "wheel-turning monarch," for spreading Buddhism, Ashoka had a checkered past. Ashoka, World Conqueror* (Persona)

Much is made of how Ashoka, the bloodthirsty emperor of the Maurya, embraced non-violence and Buddhism. But what of Ashoka before this revelation? Had he not experienced a profound revelation upon witnessing his own troops' bloody slaughter of the Kalinga around 260 BCE, his legacy today may be one of conquest by the sword, rather than the mind.

I hope there will be more than one Civ representing Iranian/Persian history one day. So much they could do, like Parthians, Sassanids, Safavids, etc.

We don't know the official name yet, but I'd be disappointed if they called antiquity Persia just Persia, and not Achaemenid Persia. The Iranian Civilization is one of the few civs that works perfectly well for the age system, as there are representatives in each of the ages.

AWC looks great! His ability seems a tad OP?

Names can be changed.
