Apologies if this has already been posted before, but the search function isn't switched on.

I normally don't put my workers on automate improvements and automate trade network (I like micromanaging) but when you have over 50 workers you have to do it for practicality reasons. Anyway, playing as the Americans, I noticed some of my workers building railroads on German soil as I had an Open Borders treaty with them. I found this unusual considering Germany didn't have access to railroads yet. At least railroads no longer give those big bonuses to production and food otherwise I'd have been subsidising their economy!

Anyone else notice this? Any views on the effectiveness of worker automation in Civ4 as related to Civ3?

No I hadnt noticed yet, but I was going to attempt it (and more) Old trick from civ3, cross the border and screw up their improvememnts. C4 has much more potential. Build shop over farm etc... screw up his food source. Or vis versa, screw up his shields and overpopulate his city. Oh dang, thats an exploit. Now they are going to fix it.

that worker might connecting your cities that crosses germany border
A road would be quite sufficient for that. No railroad required, is it? There's no extra trade bonus for having a railroad between cities as far as I can tell.

You can't build improvements but roads outside of your cultural borders.

Oddly enough, my workers don't want to build rail on my own soil. I've never had them build on foreign soil though.
